When I was very young I was bitten by a dog and while I have largely gotten over it and can coexist with them I prefer cats.

When I was little I got bit by a dog and scratched by a cat. For some reason, I resented the cat a lot more than I did the dog.

The whole "cats are aloof and not affectionate as a rule" thing is kind of a myth. I actually volunteer with cats at my local shelter, and I can say with a large sample pool to back up my findings that female cats are cold bitches and male cats are basically small dogs.

Anecdotally, my cat fetches, comes when called, waits at the door for us to get home, and curls up next to us at night. He doesn't race around at 3am or knock shit over or hide under the bed. Every female cat I've ever had did all of those things on the regular.

I mean, I wouldn't abandon a cat if it ended up being aloof or wacky...I would just end up spending the rest of its life trying to get it to love me and probably failing. I only met one cat who was consistently friendly and it was a semi-feral cat I sort of forced my parents to adopt when I was 4 after I kept sneaking out to feed her and then sneaking her into the house. I've never really met another I've been quite so cool with. Every dog I meet, though, I have been able to befriend quickly. So not a rule, but even if your anecdote holds true, ~half the population I will not be able to befriend.

I wish I could have a dog too. There is a dog in my everyday life that makes me happy, and it is a dog that I see walking with its old lady owner every day on my way to work and also sometimes on the way home!! I call it the potato dog because it is potato shaped with skinny legs. It looks like a schipperke but like 3x bigger.

I don't know what's going on in this thread but my cat plays fetch with his toy mice and is prone to wrapping himself around your limbs so I don't really get the point of dogs.

ETA: Sometimes he hides the mouse in a boot and then plays with the boot.

My greyhound is basically a horse-sized cat. He licks himself clean, sleeps all day in the sun, never ever barks, and is nearly as fast as a cheetah. But he's better than a cat because he poops in the great outdoors. I vote dog.
