Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Thank you everyone for the encouraging words yesterday. I have regrouped and feel a lot better today. There are other places I'm still waiting on decisions. I'm also going to go to ASW and--there's no other way to put it--beg. Make sure they recieved my need access forms and tax returns. I'm going to talk to financial aid face to face and show them who I am and my story. It probably won't make a difference, but I'm not going to give up! I didn't get to where I am now by crying and giving up, and I'm not going to start now. At least I'll know I did everything I could, and it is their loss.

I withdrew from ASW, with reference to the other scholarships I have received. Their response was very polite but didn't budge on offering me $0. I hope others have better luck

With $0 from UVA it's probably out of the running for me, but I'll still go to ASW and see what happens.

Checking in (should have a while ago I suppose). Sorry to all those who didn't get what they were hoping for from UVA. Best of luck in negotiations with UVA or wherever else you applied!

Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Housing post for anyone looking for something within walking distance. Consider Cedars Court. I'm graduating this year and my landlady is looking to keep renting the apartment to law students.
It's a one-bedroom apartment, right off Barracks Rd., about a 15-min walk to the law school. It's on the top (4th) floor corner with two balconies. Rent is $825 a month, and the complex does have washers and dryers.
PM me if you're interested and I will put you in touch with her.

Hoping everything works out for those admitted into UVA in terms of aid. See you all at the ASW (if you all are attending).

Checking in here! UVA just moved up into a top position for me with a very unexpected admittance. Hoping to get out there for a visit!

Hey, I just read through the entire thread and got glimpses of your story based on what you've posted.Nolachicken wrote:Thank you everyone for the encouraging words yesterday. I don't know if it means anything coming from a stranger, but I sincerely hope that you get what you're asking for from the FA people. I hope to see you as a classmate in the fall. If that doesn't happen, I wish you nothing but the best at whatever law school is lucky enough to have you.

Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
I had emailed Jennifer Hulvey after getting admitted yesterday to thank her and to ask about merit aid for those of us admitted here recently. She said that "Regarding scholarship aid, I think we are on hold with awarding any more merit scholarships until after the first deposit deadline in April. All admissions applications are reviewed for merit aid, and if you think that you may require any need-based aid (like student loans), be sure that you complete your FAFSA."
Sort of disappointing that later admits won't know about merit aid until after depositing, but it doesn't affect my decision much. Just wanted to share here in case anybody else was wondering.

Just got off the phone with FinAid. UVA is almost certainly finished awarding merit-based aid this cycle. After April 19th, they will take a look at the incoming class and reassess whether or not to award more aid. UVA has only issued merit-based aid after the seat deposit deadline one time in the last 8 years.Navyhornguy wrote:I had emailed Jennifer Hulvey after getting admitted yesterday to thank her and to ask about merit aid for those of us admitted here recently. Not looking good for folks still awaiting merit-based aid packages. And, since UVA is famous for not negotiating... looks like I'm probably out.

So the additional aid would only be awarded to those who have already deposited or are coming off the waitlist, then?Hank William Shatner wrote:Just got off the phone with FinAid. Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
What he's saying is that there is basically no additional aid at all. They're done unless they really need to raise their medians because too many people above median withdraw. This is unlikely due to last year's debacle, I'm betting UVA has been keeping a particularly tight/conservative handle on their outstanding offers. They can't afford headlines like last year's again.jewkidontheblock wrote:So the additional aid would only be awarded to those who have already deposited or are coming off the waitlist, then?Hank William Shatner wrote:Just got off the phone with FinAid. That's what it sounds like. So, you have to roll the dice, submit the seat deposit, and hope that you'll get a merit-based aid offer, which is unlikely. Ugh, this is so not fair to people who need the money to make the decision. It basically privileges those who can afford to make the deposit with no other information than what's already been given.Hank William Shatner wrote:That's what it sounds like. I think the assumption should be that no one will get any additional funding - the odds sound very, very low.RedWhite&Blonde wrote:Ugh, this is so not fair to people who need the money to make the decision.
