For most people its a mix of both. Most ppl will love it until they're about 6 months in. Thats when a lot of the "coolness" factor of NY starts to wear off, you start getting used to everything, and the constant shit that you experience on a daily basis like what is mentioned above starts to really get to you. Once you get to ~2-3 years in, people will be split into one group who can't imagine living anywhere else and losing out on everything that NY has to offer and another group who are one job offer and massive paycut away from getting the fuck out.Generally wrote:I don't know if I am going to hate this place or love it......tappatappatappa wrote:Did I say I was joking?Budfox55 wrote:This. If you live here for three years, you'll be totally unfazed by weird stuff like the above and hate most people you don't know for being in your space too often. Other than that, it's great.Generally wrote:Y'all are not selling me.. haharska884 wrote:Seriously one of the most NY things ever. In all seriousness, though, this city is amazing. There are just some weird side-effects that come from being crammed into such a small space with so many people, but the benefits of being here far outweigh any of that. If you're not someone who really needs outdoors/hiking/open spaces and you're comfortable being around other people all the time, you'll love it.

Case and point, this person is a part of the first group that I was describing above. The "can't imagine living anywhere else and losing out on everything that NY has to offer" group.rska884 wrote:If you live here for three years, you'll be totally unfazed by weird stuff like the above and hate most people you don't know for being in your space too often. Also, I'll counter the nature thing a little. Yea a lot of those ppl def end hating NYC, but also so do a lot of people who come from other cities such as Boston, Chicago, DC, anywhere really in California, etc.

I'm from the South. Pretty used to nature and the country, but I do enjoy big cities.Budfox55 wrote:

Entertainingly, I'm in the second group at the moment, although I'm about to sign on for at least three more years here. This city can burn you out regardless of how much you love it, but I've already been here for a while - if you're coming for law school, you're going to have a blast.Budfox55 wrote:Case and point, this person is a part of the first group that I was describing above. I live in DC, committed to NYU and I'm equal parts apprehensive and excited about the size and population density of NYC. I'm not sure if I'll end up hating it or loving it. What I do know is that NYC-is-the-best people who move to DC are incredibly obnoxious and complain incessantly about pizza, bagels, restaurants, public transit, the works. They leave NYC because the policy world is in DC and act like it is this gargantuan sacrifice and their their soul that will never heal.

Not trying to argue that the bagels or pizza here are in any way better. They are garbage compared to NYC. It's just not a BFD.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2019
Loved ASW but my favorite part was when a few current students I had met took me and a few others out to a mixer at a bar, which is where I got to meet a whole range of students and ply them with questions while slightly (?) intoxicated. Was also impressed with how many drink tickets NYU provided. Was really glad to see how much everyone loved NYU - the only downside I heard was from the students who don't like NYC, mostly because of the whole space issue. I will say that when I got back to LA, I was really overwhelmed with how big my current apartment is. I have never, ever felt that way before.

Received a pretty prompt "nope" for financial aid reconsideration. My numbers are between 50% and 75% and between 25% and 50%, so I'm pretty disappointed. PM for more details.

I've been here 5 years, and I'd put myself in a third group, which I think is just as common as the two you mentioned: sort of a mixture of the two groups. I always talk about getting the fuck out as soon as I can, but deep down I know I'll probably be here forever, complaining about how miserable and expensive it is the whole time.Budfox55 wrote: For most people its a mix of both. Given NYU's cost of living budget, I imagine I will be become intimately familiar with $1 slices and necessarily ignorant of NYC's restaurantsBudfox55 wrote:That's because pizza, bars, and restaurants ARE incredibly betterseagan823 wrote:I live in DC, committed to NYU and I'm equal parts apprehensive and excited about the size and population density of NYC. Re: NYU Law Class of 2019
HA. 100% agreed. I actually would include myself circa august 2015 in this group as well, especially because my family and most of my friends are from here. Luckily, I had the opportunity to live in other cities recently for a few months due to work. That kind of gave me the spark I needed. I'm targeting DC post law school, so fingers crossed. Also unless NYU comes in with a FAT increased aid offer (which from reading this thread seems extremely unlikely), I'll most likely be heading to NU in the fall. Who would have ever thought that a large city could have clean streets?cbbinnyc wrote:I've been here 5 years, and I'd put myself in a third group, which I think is just as common as the two you mentioned: sort of a mixture of the two groups. Don't forget Mamoun's, right around the corner from NYU on Macdougal. Best falafel $2.50 can buy (I refuse to accept that they've increased prices).Budfox55 wrote:ahhh yes, 2 bros. $2.50 falafel? That is fantastic. I lived off of two pound falafel when I studied abroad in Cairo. Granted, two pounds was like 34 cents, but I will gladly pay an extra couple dollars to avoid gastroenteritis. Speaking of pizza and falafel, anyone know anything about NYU's gym?AnonymousPython wrote:Don't forget Mamoun's, right around the corner from NYU on Macdougal. I heard at ASW that it is currently being remodeled and I think it's pretty close to the school.seagan823 wrote:

Yeah, it's great, though I should probably come to terms with the fact that it's actually $3.50 now. I used to live in the East Village and basically subsisted off of the 2 Bros and Mamoun's on St. Marks while cramped into my shoebox in a shared 600 sq-foot 3 BR (!) apt.seagan823 wrote: $2.50 falafel? Yeah the main gym is being knocked down/rebuilt. There's another much smaller gym a couple blocks up in one of the undergrad dorms and I think a temporary replacement gym somewhere.slippin_jimmy wrote:I heard at ASW that it is currently being remodeled and I think it's pretty close to the school.seagan823 wrote:

I just got an email informing my award has been changed. It went up $15k (I'm intending to get into public interest law). I'm not exactly sold, but least it's a little better than what it was.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
