Is anyone on this thread still considering going at sticker? Long time lurker here with no undergrad debt and finding this decision difficult.

What about Durham?

I have never lived there, so I don't know how the cost of living really compares to Charlottesville (my experience is rural rust belt childhood and Manhattan for the last ~9 years). The tuition looks similar (about same as in-state UVA and slightly less than out-of-state, though you can probably qualify for in-state UVA after 1L) and the annual estimated expenses look to be a slightly higher at Duke. You might be in a position to negotiate aid for the difference since they are peer schools in many ways, but I am by no means an expert. (Edited to fix formatting.)

I also received only loans (assumed this would be the case) and fully understand that for some people debt is a deal breaker, but one thing that may be worth considering for people who have offers elsewhere is the difference in cost of living and tuition between schools. If you have $20k/year from a private school in a major city, it might not actually be such an extreme difference from "sticker" at UVA if it's really where you want to go given that it's a state school and Charlottesville is significantly cheaper than NYC, DC, etc. If you have a scholarship at somewhere like Michigan (top school, state school, lower cost of living, etc.), I can definitely see the quick decision, but be sure to consider everything if you aren't getting the scholarship results you were hoping for.

What about Durham?

Durham is a bit cheaper than Charlottesville. Went to undergrad in NC and am very familiar with the area.

I submitted my fafsa months ago and have not received aid notice. I've been checking SIS frequently and still nothing.

Yes, I got merit scholarship money so I got the notice and my award was posted in SIS.

haven't submitted FAFSA and assuming i won't be receiving merit aid (bc clearly no one is and I do not anticipate to either) its fair to assume I won't be contacted at all today, right?

should i just give up hope and stop wondering/worrying/checking?

I would have loved to go to UVA but I just can't justify it at sticker. Duke and Vandy both offered me substantial amounts and I'm still waiting to hear back about scholarships from Berkeley and Chicago. Even though UVA would've probably been my top choice with scholarships, I just can't go when there's comparable schools at less of a cost.

She seemed to say that there's nothing to put in an aid notice if you haven't been approved for federal loans and also haven't received a scholarship.
