You should read the A Song of Ice and Fire series just to get excited about what a badass Arya Stark is.
Re-reading right now in advance of TWOW (it's coming soon, I swear it has to be) and am blown away by how much I missed when I read it the first time. Rushing through those books to find out what happens next is the wrong way to go about it.

Arya's such a badass. And honestly, I love Sansa too, although more in anticipation than anything that's happened.
Ha! My wife and I read the books at the same time, and she hates Sansa so much. She's naive, vain, and won't stand up for herself.

But I agree with you that something big is coming for her in TWOW, though I don't want to spoil anything for people who aren't caught up.
Yeah I think that description fits a lot of what we've seen from her, but I think I see where she's headed and I'm excited for her.
I'm Team Margaery all the way. She's by far the most badass female because she knows how to play the game while still being a straight-up boss. Also she deserves the throne because Renly was the true king/only person with claim to the throne who wasn't a huge dick about it so she should inherit. Duh.
I agree with everything except for Renly having a claim. Just about everything that's gone wrong in the series can be blamed on him being too full of himself. :x

I know he has no claim!!!!

Like when Brienne does the thing toward the end of the last season and says it's in the name of the one true king... I mean it's great that you're loyal to him, but NO, he did not have a legitimate claim.

Nice.

You're up, Weasley.
My loving and faithful, benwyatt. From the day you offered to either propose or compensate me for my prank, I knew we were destined to be together. No amount of money could every replace you. Our love has grown stronger than any troll and soars higher than the dragons. Amortentia is weak when compared to the power of our true love. Normally I would have come for ur head on behalf of Stannis but the shit he pulled last season...
I like Margaery in the show but in the books she's a lot more annoying.

The wedding in this thread sounds like beautiful, beautiful jibberish to me because I never finished Harry Potter, so maybe you all have saved me from a similar fate...though I think Game of Thrones weddings are far less cute, based on what little I know. Thanks!

The books definitely have their share of sexual violence, but (IMO) Martin does a good job of presenting it as one of the terrible realities that the characters in this world have to deal with - it's definitely not the only messed up thing about the books, and that negativity seems to be a central theme of the writing. I think the show at times has generated controversy because it failed to have that sensitivity around the topic and instead presented them as shocking things happening for the sake of shocking.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if the topic itself is something you don't want to see in your media, ASOIAF probably isn't the best series for you, but if the concern with the show is specific to the "gratuitous" part of the description, then definitely give the books a shot.

Yeah, my concern really is with the gratuitous aspect. If it moves the plot forward/contributes to character development in a meaningful way, I don't mind. The wariness comes from remembering friends who love the books and generally love the show being frustrated with a number of episodes that were over the top (and I think even added things in that weren't in the books?). I appreciate your thoughtful clarification, though!

Yup that's exactly it - there are a lot of people who take issue with any change between the books and the show, but (again IMO) the ones in question were unnecessary and fundamentally altered some character arcs/relationships in ways I didn't like. It's generally used to better purpose in the books when it does happen - but I didn't want you to run into something graphic (it'll definitely happen) if it's an issue you generally try to avoid.
