I like Firefly but I am not a cult fan like many. I can see why it was cancelled, but I don't necessarily think it was justified. If you like camp (think Doctor Who or Buffy [also watch Buffy if you haven't]) you will like FIrefly.

Oh, and watch The People v. OJ Simpson. I've binged the first 8 episodes after seeing a thread about it in the lounge and it has been phenomenal.

Re: Senioritis / Quitting-my-job-soon-iorits
Thanks! I actually watched Firefly last fall due to my LSAT tutor being an aggressive fan and making me promise to watch it, but the others are all new to me. Having people quote things to me and wait for me to respond while I stare blankly was not fun and you may have saved me from some of that in law school.BirdLawExpert wrote:I mean, TV-wise Battlestar Galactica is a pretty standard suggestion from me for people who seriously enjoyed the West Wing. Slightly more granular in that the policy decisions made by the core group deal with a very confined group of people, and with the added fun of a persistent and inventive villain. Also, more recently, I'm very much enjoying Madam Secretary and getting some serious West Wing vibes. Also, Veep. Just watch Veep. And if you like Battlestar or Firefly, check out The 100. I'm only a five or six episodes in but it's been pretty good so far.ChervonaKatya wrote:After becoming the person who had never read/seen Harry Potter (semi-working on it) or seen the West Wing (have now seen series ~7 times) in undergrad, I'm taking advice on things I should read/watch before law school. Also if you liked the West Wing but thought "this could be more preachy and weirdly sexist" go watch the Newsroom. I honestly liked it but Sorkin be Sorkin.

Witches and Wizards and Squibs, we are gathered here today to celebrate a special kind of magic that can only exist between two extraordinary souls: love. benwyatt and thelostweasley are people that we all know and love, and as they come together today I would ask you all to bear witness to their love as they enter into the eternal covenant of marriage. This institution, at its core, is the outward sign of devotion between two souls which reflects an inner commitment to love and cherish one another. I understand that the bride and groom have prepared their own vows, benwyatt, please say nice things about your bride so that we can all get weepy.

Re: Senioritis / Quitting-my-job-soon-iorits
I watch so much television that it's reeeeally hard for me to narrow this down, but I'm going to confine my suggestions to things with legal/political premises so that I don't write an essay:
The Americans
The Good Wife
How To Get Away With Murder (definitely a soap opera, and yes I'm aware that 1L will be nothing like this)
+1 for The People vs. OJ
Damages (it ended so you've got the full series to binge)
Scandal (see HTGAWM - Shonda Rhimes 4 President)
American Crime (season 1 was a little more fast-paced but both seasons are excellent self-contained dramas about the ripple effects of different types of crimes on the parties involved and their communities)
I'm also going to plug Catastrophe on Amazon because I watched both seasons in literally a day and a half and it's so goddamn funny (but not remotely law-related).

I've seen Firefly and have seen Parks and Rec more times than the West Wing, somehow, and may or may not quote it once a day.
Books, I usually can't get into sci-fi and fantasy much (but if you know of anything with strong, well-developed female characters, I'm down to read!) and tend toward non-fiction and early 20th century American fiction (love Fitzgerald and Steinbeck) and some Russian and Ukrainian lit. I recognize this means I will never understand book references from most people under the age of 50 at the rate I'm going. Please help?
I share all of your feelings on Firefly. Have not seen Doctor Who because it feels like a big commitment, but will definitely check out Buffy!TheKisSquared wrote: Shit yes I second Parks and Rec.

You should read the A Song of Ice and Fire series just to get excited about what a badass Arya Stark is.ChervonaKatya wrote:Books, I usually can't get into sci-fi and fantasy much (but if you know of anything with strong, well-developed female characters, I'm down to read!)

Re-reading right now in advance of TWOW (it's coming soon, I swear it has to be) and am blown away by how much I missed when I read it the first time. Rushing through those books to find out what happens next is the wrong way to go about it.WinterComing wrote:You should read the A Song of Ice and Fire series just to get excited about what a badass Arya Stark is.ChervonaKatya wrote:Books, I usually can't get into sci-fi and fantasy much (but if you know of anything with strong, well-developed female characters, I'm down to read!)

Oh, my dearest weasley, where should I begin? From the first moment I read of your prankswomanship, I have been enthralled. You may be thelostweasley, but before you, I was a lost Wyatt. Now I've been found. By you and by love. You alohomora'd my heart. With you by my side, we can face any boggart, troll, or dark wizard. Ha! My wife and I read the books at the same time, and she hates Sansa so much. She's naive, vain, and won't stand up for herself.rska884 wrote:Re-reading right now in advance of TWOW (it's coming soon, I swear it has to be) and am blown away by how much I missed when I read it the first time. But I agree with you that something big is coming for her in TWOW, though I don't want to spoil anything for people who aren't caught up.

I'm Team Margaery all the way. She's by far the most badass female because she knows how to play the game while still being a straight-up boss. Also she deserves the throne because Renly was the true king/only person with claim to the throne who wasn't a huge dick about it so she should inherit. Duh.rska884 wrote:Yeah I think that description fits a lot of what we've seen from her, but I think I see where she's headed and I'm excited for her.WinterComing wrote:Ha!
