Duke already matches people with current students during ASW. I forget exactly how you sign up, but I think it's through the Facebook group.lymenheimer wrote:I don't think they organize something like this, though it would be an interesting idea to bring up. The best way to manage this would be to try and contact a current student on here or see if admissions can put you in contact with someone who may be able to help. Is housing is organized for all admitted students? I received an email yesterday regarding housing and airport pick-up provided through the Asian Law Students Association and the South Asian Law Students Association. Not sure if this is the same thing or something else.meat tornado wrote:Duke already matches people with current students during ASW. Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
Assuming it hasn't changed from two years ago, Duke provides either a reimbursement of $x (generally meant to cover flight costs, and higher the further away you travel from) or they provide you with a hotel room on campus (I believe at the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center). If you're receiving an email from a student organization about lodging for ASW, that's something separate and most people won't have that option. Duke does put all ASW attendees in touch with a current student, but if you're trying to stay with someone, I'd try for more advance notice than that unless you're fine using a hotel as a fallback option. Personally, I took the financial reimbursement, arranged my own hotel (Red Roof Inn is only $50-60/night), and used a rental car.a2s8h wrote:Is housing is organized for all admitted students? Has anyone had their status checker update with a scholarship mailing?
If they're on their timeline I'm expecting mine soon so I'm wondering what it will say.

Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
We had a brief discussion on this over in the applicants thread and it looks like they are behind on the timeline. One person was told they would hear back by the end of January and still hasn't heard. Sounds like we should settle in for a long(-ish) wait.benwyatt wrote:Has anyone had their status checker update with a scholarship mailing?

I saw that conversation but disregarded it since the scholarship committee met for the first time on 2/5 (I think. If not 2/5 it was 1/29) so hearing back by the end of January would have been impossible.Meno wrote:We had a brief discussion on this over in the applicants thread and it looks like they are behind on the timeline. Received a welcome letter/pamphlet unrelated to fin aid from Dean Levi's office today via USPS, as a heads up to anyone checking the mail for scholly info. Don't want anyone to have a heart attack.

I interviewed during week 1 and was initially told I'd hear back by the end of January as well. I followed from this thread and the Applicants thread that the committee wouldn't even meet until Feb, so ... maybe they were supposed to have a meeting at the end the month last month and something happened?

Let's dispel the fiction that Duke doesn't know what they're doing, they know exactly what they're doing.
I appreciate the heads-up! Otherwise I would have thought that big packet had a bunch of zeroes in it...

I'll be shocked if they don't send out the first scholarship batch by the end of the week. Last year by then they had sent out 3 groups. #bitter

+1. I'm sort of hoping they're just going to release one huge wave, but that's probably not very likely.urbanist11 wrote:I'll be shocked if they don't send out the first scholarship batch by the end of the week. Last year by then they had sent out 3 groups. #bitter

Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
Wanted to check in. Looking forward to ASW. It seems very likely at this point that I'm going to be attending Duke.
It still seems a bit ambiguous how first-year housing is coordinated. Seems like almost everyone lives off campus. I'd kind of like to have some housemates, do they have a set process for facilitating that or do people just sort of randomly scramble on the Facebook page or something?

Re: Duke Law Class of 2019
There isn't really coordination for 1L housing. Most (if not all - I think they have some grad student family options, but I don't recall) housing options are off-campus so you have to do the hunt and rent on your own. Facebook page, or here, would be a fine idea if you want something that is more coordinated and/or isn't "rent by the bed".KiltedKicker wrote: It still seems a bit ambiguous how first-year housing is coordinated. Current 1L here. They have a guide to life at Duke Law thing online, and it has some recommended apartment complexes that a decent amount of law students live in. Just google search Duke Law De Novo and it should come up. Also in the facebook page they'll create a google doc for 0Ls to find roommates. I don't know anyone who lives on campus and most people live about a 5-10 minute drive from campus.KiltedKicker wrote:Wanted to check in. Looking forward to ASW. Thank you both for the help. I knew most students live off campus, just wasn't sure if there was a way for 0Ls to find other 0L housemates. Apparently those few weeks Duke fell out of the AP top 25 in Bball messed up the entire operation of Duke Law's financial aid process
Definitely a noticeable delay going on
