I've lived in the San Francisco area for 13 years now where supposedly public transit is fantastic and I got fed up and bought a car six years ago, never looked back. Sure, cars are costly and you have to keep up on the maintenance but it's worth it not to have to add 20 minutes of waiting time each way any time I want to go somewhere, and to cut the actual travel time in half (unless there's traffic - but that's what Waze is for!) Dunno about NYC but around here the transit systems are decaying faster than anyone has the money to fix them, and there are way more people riding than they have capacity to carry - i.e. at least 15% of the time the bus you're waiting for won't stop because there's no room on board. Not to mention the fares have more than doubled in the last five years.BirdLawExpert wrote:As a Houstonian, +180.Bearlyalive wrote: #1 reason I'm most excited to get the hell out of LA is that I will no longer need to drive EVERYWHERE. My car is in that fun little spot where the check engine light is on every other day, but no mechanic can find a problem (2009 VW Jetta, ~70k miles). It's absurd.
I'm so jealous of the trains and subways and functional public transport ya'll have on the East Coast, and so ready to call it my own.
I've lived in SF my whole life (except 4 years in college) and drive everywhere with the small exception of taking public transportation to work nowadays because downtown is a hot mess.
