The financial aid guy during the ASW presentation stated they extended 60-65% of their offers already. The rest will be determined in the next couple weeks.mabes wrote:Does anyone know if Penn will let you know they're not offering merit aid? Does anyone know/have experience with speaking to financial aid during ASW/Preview day regarding scholarship negotiation? I spoke with financial aid recently over the phone and was told to come speak to them this Saturday to discuss matters further. Just was curious if I should be prepared to play hardball or if they won't make offers in person. Thanks!

Re: Penn Law Class of 2019
last weekend they didn't seem to open to personal conversations about numbers. They also said they would start making decisions over the next couple weeks. That being said if you are coming to their next event I wouldn't expect to speak numbers to them or even be offered. they would most likely make those decisions in conjunction with everyone else in the admissions and offer over email. Them offering in person would be rather impulsive and wouldn't give the chance to look at all the facts about your merits.Eloverro wrote:Does anyone know/have experience with speaking to financial aid during ASW/Preview day regarding scholarship negotiation? So has anyone heard back about negotiations?
I sent my competing offers after getting back from ASW and the scholarships email response was basically like "thanks, we'll take that under advisement"
I'd love to have some idea as to how long I should expect to wait.
Thanks!

Also wondering about this! I sent in my competing offers 3/18, met with them in person to discuss it on 3/21, and now I'm itching to hear from them!zyxwvut2 wrote:So has anyone heard back about negotiations?

Re: Penn Law Class of 2019
Has anyone who applied for a Wilson scholarship in March been notified one way or another yet? Invited to apply 3/14, sent my essay 3/18 and the email said deadline for accepting scholarship if granted was 4/15 so I'm just wondering if I should assume I haven't received it if I haven't been notified by this point.

I spoke with financial aid and sent them my competing offers as well. Was told to come speak to them this saturday, could you tell me what your experience was like? I assumed it would be them sizing up your interest in Penn and how important financials were.hl1917 wrote:Also wondering about this! What I can say however is that I was told they generally hold off offers until around April 15th. They told me they generally have a feel for what money is available a week before the april 15th deadline but that I should expect an answer closer to that date.

I agree - I have deadlines then too. I told them that when we spoke, so hopefully it'll be a bit sooner than that.ih8makingscreennames wrote:Well that's rude. My experience was very positive and casual. Basically, I spoke with a representative from the financial aid office about how important financial aid is to me and why, why I am very interested in attending Penn, and why I am considering the other offers. She was very blunt which I appreciated - allowed it to be a no-nonsense conversation. She told me that they will add the new information to my file and work quickly to give me an answer.... two+ weeks ago.

Yeah I sent mine in like 2 or 3 weeks ago when I got my first offer.hl1917 wrote:I agree - I have deadlines then too. Just joining this thread now: if I haven't received any invites to apply to merit-based scholarships that I'm interested in at this point, is it safe to assume I can go ahead and withdraw? Should I contact financial aid?

I had a very similar situation (though I didn't go to ASW due to work conflicts) and heard basically the same thing. They said they would work with me to meet any scholarship deadlines, but the closest deadline I have is Penn's own scholarship deadline on April 15th. Hopefully if what everyone is saying is correct, then we should hear back before then.zyxwvut2 wrote:So has anyone heard back about negotiations?

I also spoke to the office today and they told me I would hear by Wednesday, so I'd expect a wave of offers on or before then.RedWhite&Blonde wrote:I heard mid-week this week when I asked today.James.K.Polk wrote:Really hoping today....JusPassItToWill wrote:I had a very similar situation (though I didn't go to ASW due to work conflicts) and heard basically the same thing. This is probably a stupid question, but when do we apply for Stafford and grad plus loans? Do we even apply for these or does Penn just have us click accept or decline on the loans later? I apologize for the confusion/lack of general experience here

Stafford no, but there's a general "class" (online) you have to take.slizerd wrote:This is probably a stupid question, but when do we apply for Stafford and grad plus loans? Grad-plus yes, it's credit dependent, and you can't even do it for a few months.

Ok, thanks! I only need a smallish amount of the plus loan for COL so it's not as urgent but I'm worried that it'll be super close to enrollment time and I won't qualify for it or somethingJames.K.Polk wrote:Stafford no, but there's a general "class" (online) you have to take.slizerd wrote:This is probably a stupid question, but when do we apply for Stafford and grad plus loans? Had my Toll interview this past weekend; was a pleasant experience. Based on what I was told, it sounds like we could be hearing back either way, earliest, by the end of this week. Good luck to all Toll applicants!
