Well there is a difference between "merit offers still being on the table" and "on March 3, they plan to release most of their decisions". I would venture that NEARLY all decisions have gone out already. Sure there will be onesies and twosies but it would be prudent to go ahead and temper your expectations.jtg21 wrote:Have a lot of people reported receiving awards besides the Dillards? "3) Some of you have already been notified of merit awards, as some of those have been going out via snail mail on a rolling basis. Merit aid is awarded by our scholarship committee, and as you are a brilliant and accomplished group, it's a competitive process. We review EVERY applicant for merit aid, based on your admission application, and by March 3, we expect to have released most, if not all, of those awards. Bottom line - check SIS on March 3 (not at 8AM. Later than that. You will get an email from us to tell you aid has been posted.)"
To me, this means there are still merit offers on the table. I could be interpreting it totally incorrectly, but I feel like they might just wait to review the complete file of need/merit to offer a total award.

Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Okay, thanks for letting me know. I consider my numbers competitive, and my acceptance happened in early Jan, so I'm holding out hope for March 3. Hopefully, MyLSN is a good indicator of my actual chances. I try to be optimistic with all things financial aid, since it's such a black box process. Also, if all things end up being sticker, that makes my decision pretty simple.doobleykah wrote: Well there is a difference between "merit offers still being on the table" and "on March 3, they plan to release most of their decisions". So is UVA inflexible on negotiation? I have 2 full rides+stipend from top 20 schools (only two I've heard back from on finaid so far, hooping for some decent T14 offers as well), is it really likely going to come back at me with 0 dollars? I really want UVA, but at sticker it's really, really hard to justify.

I believe UVA's M.O. is to offer big money to the higher number applicants to keep their medians up, and offer admittance at sticker to reach students to keep their bills paid. Are you not GI Bill eligible?Nagster5 wrote:So is UVA inflexible on negotiation? That would definitely explain why the 25th is so low.doobleykah wrote:I believe UVA's M.O. is to offer big money to the higher number applicants to keep their medians up, and offer admittance at sticker to reach students to keep their bills paid. Re: UVA Law Class of 2019
Only 40%. Sticker for me is still hard to swallow given my other options. If l I can get my Top 20 school closer to a full ride offer that would up my stipend to over 50k. I was pretty set on UVA but if I get no-offered with the other things I have on the table I might have to pass, which is a real shame, I really love this school. Does anyone know if they split up the big awards (like dillards/full rides) when people turn them down, or do they just go and offer someone else a Dillard? Obviously I'd much rather have twice as many half-rides offered than half as many full-rides.doobleykah wrote:I believe UVA's M.O. is to offer big money to the higher number applicants to keep their medians up, and offer admittance at sticker to reach students to keep their bills paid. When I log onto the financial aid website, it says inquiry access denied. I wonder if this means they aren't releasing my financial aid info until the third, or does it mean there is no aid? Or both!

From the Facebook page: "2) YOU CAN'T SEE ANYTHING ON SIS YET. Nothing. Nada. Even if you have already been awarded a merit scholarship, it isn't on SIS yet. That all happens March 3, so you don't need to check back until then, because there is nothing to see until then. Probably after lunch on March 3. smile emoticon (I promise we will get all of the aid online as fast as we can that day, but please be patient with us. There are a lot of moving pieces and parts!)"Nolachicken wrote:When I log onto the financial aid website, it says inquiry access denied. Stop being so damn pessimistic! You are all bumming me out. Let's all just wait a few days and look what we have on March 3rd. Seems like there is definitely a chance more aid will be shown there based off what the facebook post said. If that's wrong, well then we can all be sad and cry together, but there really isn't any point to being so pessimistic about it right now when there is still a chance we will get some money. And if you don't get money then try to negotiate.

I sat in on a class last week and toured the school and omg I'm more in love now (if that's even possible). I'm so pumped for the ASW in like two weeks.

Anyone know at all what need based scholarships look like in terms of amount? What if your EFC is $0 like me because I'm poor...

Only thing I can tell you is that based on what I read from last years thread $0 EFC doesn't mean you are going to get any need based aid. It seems kinda unpredictable.ChocoFreeze wrote:Anyone know at all what need based scholarships look like in terms of amount? What if your EFC is $0 like me because I'm poor...

From what I understand, need-based = mostly loans (from UVA's website)Generally wrote:Only thing I can tell you is that based on what I read from last years thread $0 EFC doesn't mean you are going to get any need based aid. When I asked Faulk if UVA's FA was like Duke's (you only get need if you get merit) he said no. It would seem that they are separate awards.RedWhite&Blonde wrote:Is need-based scholarships mainly on a merit basis though?ChocoFreeze wrote:I'm frightened. Unrelated, but I don't understand Duke's process at all. Really hoping UVA is more generous since they're my top choice.skimmilk wrote:When I asked Faulk if UVA's FA was like Duke's (you only get need if you get merit) he said no. Duke = larger % (~87%) of class with $ but smaller awardsRedWhite&Blonde wrote: Unrelated, but I don't understand Duke's process at all. Really hoping UVA is more generous since they're my top choice.
UVA = small % (~45%) of class with $ but larger awards

Good luck getting 65-70% of your class to pay sticker, UVA. Definitely explains the lower 25th numbers in last year's entering class profile.
