I've lurked here a bit during my lunch hour the last couple weeks (hi! sorry for not saying hi sooner!) and the love triangle (pentagon?) that has developed has become something of a weird soap opera that I'm strangely emotionally invested in and I felt obligated to say something since I've derived so much entertainment from this thread. How I feel about my recent work product:



I'm in this weird place where I'm being completely unproductive with my own scripts/stories, but hypercritical of scripts that I'm editing/doctoring. My manager called me up and asked if I had finished anything other than the contest scripts I already submitted, and when I told him how much work I had done on other people's stuff he laughed, called me an idiot, and hung up.

That sounds about right, but, I cannot for the life of me gather what you do for work, other than the obvious subbing lol

Substitute teach, work for a pub quiz company and host a few trivia nights, write movie scripts/stories and fix other people's writing for uncredited cash. Being that I live in Houston, that last one is tricky. It would be much easier to do from Austin, Nashville, or anywhere on the east coast.

Ahhh of course, now that you mention it, I remember the pub quiz gig from idk weeks ago? hours ago? years ago? the wait for august and DST has warped my belief in the existence of time. And yeah I could see Houston being a not-booming scene for that type of thing.

It was fine when I was writing with someone in LA, but now he's taking acting classes because some agent had a crush on him and told him that she'd sign him if he got better. He's a terrible awful actor, like middle school musical level acting, but he completely abandoned all of our writing projects.

Do you focus your scripts on a certain genre? Any script ever been bought? (sorry if you've covered this. Haven't read thread thoroughly).

I mostly write suspense films, the genre in which those films take place varies, but I'm most comfortable with crime stories and very granular science fiction. Occasionally I dabble in comedy, but even that is mostly Coen Brothers-esque in that it's highly stylized and genre dependent. We almost had a pilot purchased by Crackle, Sony's Netflix competitor, but that fell through at the last second (which is what happens most of the time). Film-wise, it's much harder to sell a feature script than a pilot, but I've got a few production companies that are interested in what I've been writing but who also would rather not bear the brunt of the financing.

As far as it being the polar opposite to lawyering, I don't know if I'd agree with that. Obviously I don't know a lot about lawyering, but screenwriting involves a whole lot of research, the ability to write well, and the ability to empathize with a given audience. From my limited knowledge, those are three things that are pretty important in law. Also, being familiar with the legal side of things helps immensely if I ever want to start a production company of my own, not that that's my long-term plan or anything.
