I'd like to give special thanks to my lack of social life & deep hatred/avoidance of my job. I couldn't have made it this far without them.
In all seriousness, thanks for creating the thread.

On a more practical note, any idea what most people wear to the law school on a daily basis? I’m in my early 20’s (male, straight), and my wardrobe is split between “dad” (I’m not a dad) and “undergrad”. Is it like college, where people just wear whatever random stuff is on their bed, or is it more formal?

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. It doesn't matter. Professors don't respect you more or less based on what you wear. I wear basketball shorts, sneakers, and t-shirts every day. Most people started out fairly formal and began dressing in casual clothes after the first month. I showed up in casual clothes on the first day. Some people always dress fairly formal (like business casual) but in the end, it won't make any sort of difference.GatorToLS wrote:On a more practical note, any idea what most people wear to the law school on a daily basis? Just be logical.(i.e. if you have an event or a guest speaker and you want to make a good impression, dress more formally...otherwise, wear what you want)

I wouldn't worry about it. The backpack we got was small.(it might have changed since I was a 1L) My books and computer didn't fit in it so I just brought my own. A lot of other people ended up doing the same.Sonar80 wrote:Dammit!! Where was this info three weeks ago Roberrrto?! More on topic, can someone who goes to the college speak to the culture around the college with respect to the SJW movement? Is there a lot of that happening there at UF? I know Gainesville tends to be farther left of center than most of the areas surrounding it, and I'm curious as to the attitudes regarding this movement there. Are there safe spaces and protests happening on the reg there or is UF's population less interested in that?
How funny. The law school will be giving everyone a nice backpack during ILSP.
And yes, there is the occasional stump speech but most people are concerned more with studying.
As for the social justice movement, there's some of it but it's not happening on the regular. And people generally aren't that pushy about it. It'll be something you see over the semester but not an every day type event.
I wouldn't worry about the stigma. If you find the right firm, it's a great area to practice in. Has pros and cons like any area of the law but there's a potential to make a lot of money while still feeling like the "good guy" on both sides.Leagles5161 wrote:Nice! Good perspective going into it tooSonar80 wrote:So, what area of law are you all interested in?
I'll start - I'm more interested (for now) in real estate/wills/estates and trusts, and maybe a little bit of ADR, but my background is in criminal law and in order to leverage any of my resume, it'll have to be crim law. But, I am also aware that I may take classes in those areas and hate them, so I'm open minded about where I end up.![]()
I want to do some sort of litigation in the private sector. I know general commercial litigation is a common practice throughout many of the small firms in the state so I would definitely be attracted to that. The stigma is horrible towards personal injury but I feel like I would enjoy that as well.

Re: UF Law Class of 2019
Yeah, I've been wearing khakis and a polo shirt for the past five years every day to work, I see no reason to change that now. Maybe I'll feel differently after a few months, but honestly I already have the damned clothes, so I figure I just wear that (PS I am a dad). But, I agree with the Weasley, at the ASD and the tour I did I saw pretty much everything. I definitely saw a girl wearing just short of pajamas, and I saw another girl wearing a four inch skirt on five inch heels. As for dudes, I saw pretty much everything from basketball shorts to just short of a shirt/tie. It appeared to me that the professors didn't care. I probably won't be wearing pajamas or anything silly like that, if for no other reason than when all of us graduate and are helping each other gets jobs, I don't want to be remembered as the dude that showed up in raggedy ass pajamas.GatorToLS wrote:On a more practical note, any idea what most people wear to the law school on a daily basis? Thanks for the reply! I'll probably start in shorts and a polo and see how it goes from there. I'd consider wearing khakis, but for the first couple months of the semester Gainesville is really hot and miserable.

I plan on being casual with my dressing, maybe not bball shorts casual though.lawman84 wrote:Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. It doesn't matter. Does practice area prestige matter to you ?
I saw the post about how personal injury is looked down on.

Re: UF Law Class of 2019
lol, I have a pair of skechers (I KNOW) that are pretty excellent. I also tend to get cold easy in the AC, and I plan very diligently NOT be cold in any event whatsoever. Part of that plan is that I wear pants if I'll be spending all day somewhere where I can't control the thermostat.GatorToLS wrote:lawman84 wrote:Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
