I'd bet against the Wash U offer but mention it anyway. UVA might help, but I don't think they'll negotiate unless their offer is considerably less. Can confirm that they will sometimes negotiate though if the discrepancy between UM and a peer is largeaviendha wrote:Anyone know/think if Mich will consider a higher scholarship offer from a higher ranked school (UVA) and a much higher scholarship offer from a lower ranked school (Wash U)? My understanding is that they're willing to entertain other numbers if they didn't offer you any aid in the first place; less willing to scale up an existing aid offer. BUT: as long as you're nice and respective and humble about it, you have nothing to lose by asking!aviendha wrote:Anyone know/think if Mich will consider a higher scholarship offer from a higher ranked school (UVA) and a much higher scholarship offer from a lower ranked school (Wash U)? What does drivability look like from, say, Ypsilanti to the Law School? With an s/o that would likely work in Detroit, we'd hope to live a little more east than Ann Arbor proper.

Wondering the exact same. Hopefully a helpful Michigander can contribute.Toodle-loo wrote:What does drivability look like from, say, Ypsilanti to the Law School? With an s/o that would likely work in Detroit, we'd hope to live a little more east than Ann Arbor proper.

I'm doing the Preview Weekend the 17-19th and am thinking about renting a car for a few days to get from the airport to Ann Arbor and also to have to go into town and explore. If any TLSers are interested in hitching a ride to/from the airport for a couple bucks, PM me.

Ypsilanti is literally five to ten minutes from U of M's campus depending where at in Ypsi you are. Detroit to Ann Arbor is about 35 minutes. Hope that helps.

Sort of, but also not? I know it's within a reasonable distance, but if I can't PARK where I'm going, it's not exactly feasible, ya feel me?Mary4404 wrote:James.K.Polk wrote:Wondering the exact same. The drive is quite short, and is better for you s/o to be driving from Ypsi than Ann Arbor to Detroit because a lot of traffic accumulates around Ann Arbor. With that said, you would also experience some morning traffic and parking is never easy. I would attempt to purchase a parking spot somewhere on campus so you do not have to drive around everyday or feed meters. The best way to do that is join the undergrad FB groups and reach out to see if anybody is not using one at their house and could sell it, or look into buying a university pass.Toodle-loo wrote:Sort of, but also not? Michigan is strong at placing people in NYC. Back when I was doing OCI (about 5 years ago), NYC firms were generally taking people from a little below median on up. Obviously the most prestigious firms had higher grade cut-offs. But if you want to work in New York BigLaw and aren't too picky about V10 or whatever, then you have a good shot at it.MM722 wrote:Do you know how well Michigan does with placing people in NYC?
As a graduate student, you can get a yellow campus parking permit, which allows you to park in several lots that are within easy walking distance of the law school. This map shows where you can park: SC9 and SC38 are most convenient, but SC35 is also fairly easy. For more information, see: http://pts.umich.edu/parking/students.php.Toodle-loo wrote:Sort of, but also not? Other centrally-located places you might look into for living are Plymouth and Northville. That would give you two possible routes to take into Ann Arbor: M-14 or I-275/I-94. For your SO, going into Detroit, it would be: I-96 or I-275/I-94.

Anyone else doing summer start and unsure of how/where to find a place to live for the summer? I've got a spot in the Lawyers' Club for the regular academic year, but until then I need to sublease and I'd prefer to stay in a 1/2/3L's apartment as opposed to an undergrad's. Does the University help summer starters with this, or is there like a Facebook page or something where people are posting?

I applied to Munger for a June 1 move in but if that's a bust I'll be checking the sublet list.

I hope a lot of law students choose to live in Munger. The lawyers club is cool and all but i really like not being forced to pay 500$ a month for 12 meals a week.zyxwvut2 wrote:"The Admissions Office compiles a list of summer sublets available from current law students and recent grads, which becomes available in mid-March."Bluex12 wrote:Anyone else doing summer start and unsure of how/where to find a place to live for the summer? Same. Enrolled Summer Starter here. I just sent off my application for Munger today. I have a spot in the Lawyer's Club Locked down, but to be honest the idea of living in what is essentially a college dorm does not sound very appealing to me and the idea of eating the majority of my meals in a dining hall (no matter how good it may be) and paying a ridiculous amount of money for the privilege sounds worse.jnwa wrote:I hope a lot of law students choose to live in Munger. I'd like to say I'll be able to eat cheaply, but given that Zingerman's is less than a half-mile from Munger, I'd say that I'm probably fucked. Oh well, at least the COL in Ann Arbor is low other than that!

If you aren't sure you can email them and ask! They got back to me and told me I wasn't given any initially the day after I sent the email and were super nice. On their site it says that by Jan people should be hearing about their merit aid by 2 weeks after their admission if that helpsjmj2254 wrote:quick question for you all. admitted mid-Jan. Can I assume at this point I'm not getting any merit aid? I also received the quite lengthy merit aid email earlier this week.
I'm just trying to nail down ASW schedules with a full time job so no merit aid means withdrawing asap.
thanks!

Is it kosher to apply for housing now even though I'm not 100% sure I'm going there? It's looking like where I'll go but I won't be sure for another few weeks, but I don't know what the situation is on housing.

Checking in here! Got accepted this morning via email. Actually really surprised because it was a reach for sure and also my first T14 acceptance. I gotta say the email and the video have really hyped me up for Michigan. Maybe I can convince my husband to move there.
