Make sure you have direct deposit set up for them to deposit your excess funds. I believe if you have that done by a certain date (I believe it is tomorrow, if I'm remembering the email correctly), they will deposit $650 by the 19th, and the rest of the excess on the 31st. If you don't have direct deposit set up by tomorrow, they will just give you the entire excess funds on the 31st.HLSGunner420x69 wrote:Does anyone know how/if we can use our remaining student loans to buy books? And the school pushes out 650 dollars in loan money a week or two before disbursement of all funds so people can buy books. Check the SFS email sent on 1 August.theconsigliere wrote:costs for books are included in the total cost of attendance so yeahHLSGunner420x69 wrote:Does anyone know how/if we can use our remaining student loans to buy books? Of the $22,262 that Harvard estimates for room, board, and personal expenses, what do people think is the approximate breakdown (how much goes to room, to board, and to personal expenses)? Asking bc I'm living in the cheapest housing available and I'd like to figure out how much this is saving me compared to that estimate

I think they actually break it down somewhere in the fin aid section.theconsigliere wrote:Of the $22,262 that Harvard estimates for room, board, and personal expenses, what do people think is the approximate breakdown (how much goes to room, to board, and to personal expenses)? If you anticipate this being a genuine issue, and you have a diagnosis, I'd recommend emailing the Dean of students office. They can be quite accommodating.sfoglia wrote:Yeah, can we have a sit-out over that? Ah, thank you. I know that's an option. But the real world doesn't tend to be as accommodating, and I won't believe I belong in law school at all if I can't manage to cope.Indifference wrote:If you anticipate this being a genuine issue, and you have a diagnosis, I'd recommend emailing the Dean of students office. Part of coping (both in law school and in the real world) is being able to say, "I can't handle this" or "this is too difficult."sfoglia wrote:I won't believe I belong in law school at all if I can't manage to cope.

If you don't want to of course that's your prerogative, but as TripTrip said, don't feel like you cannot ask. I asked for an accommodation, and DoS has been professional, helpful, and understanding (as have professors). No one thinks of it as anything othet than reasonable and the right thing to do.sfoglia wrote:Ah, thank you. I know that's an option. I don't know the details of your circumstances at all, and I agree that your luck is. But I will say that the Dean of Students' Office is very friendly and willing to work with anyone who has concerns. No one reading this thread should feel like they don't belong in law school because they decide to speak with DOS about a personal issue.
Seconding this, I also requested an accommodation that was taken into consideration (as did at least one friend of mine).

Re: Harvard C/O 2019
Sorry if this has been asked before but what's the consensus on renting vs buying? It'd be nice to have books for a future library, but any practical use in holding onto say a Civil Procedure book that I could otherwise rent at close to 30% the cost of buying? Would I need that book for any other class, bar studying, etc.?

Re: Harvard C/O 2019
Personally I'm not big on future libraries. If you decide that you want one later, it's easier and cheaper to just buy out of date editions of textbooks for pennies on the dollar to fill it out. It's not like you're going to reference your casebooks ever again anyway.JedBartlet2016 wrote:Sorry if this has been asked before but what's the consensus on renting vs buying? I still bought used when the prices were comparable though, since sometimes I forgot to return them/was too lazy to go to UPS. That's why I list both prices next to each other on Dope.
