Harvard($$) vs Berkeley($$) vs Georgetown($$$$)
-COA of all three years combined
Harvard 173K (90k grant), Berkeley 168K (70k grant+ still waiting on matching), Georgetown 55k (180k scholly+grant)
-How you will be financing your COA
Loans and LRAP after graduation
-Where you are from and where you want to work, and other places where you have significant ties (if any)
I'm flexible. I've lived in rural, suburban, metropolitan cities. I like NYC and wouldn't mind returning for work. I'd like to try living in CA. I'd like to avoid cold, long winters but that won't be possible with Boston.
-Your general career goals
Public interest but not government
-Your LSAT/GPA numbers
171/3.8
-How many times you have taken the LSAT
3
My #1 choice was NYU but they offered NADA and even with LRAP I don't think I want to put myself in that financial situation. I didn't get to visit any of these schools but my hesitations are the extremely cold weather in Boston (yes, weather matters to me... a lot), the really large class size at Georgetown and their focus on government for PI, and Berkeley... well they're really slow about the scholarship info. They've probably ran out of funds by now. I would like to have some sort of quality of life and in an environment students are generally happy in. I've heard so many horror stories from Columbia and Cornell.
Any thoughts on which school I should commit to? I've got to choose soon but I'm stuck.

Harvard, especially since you want non-gov PI and LIPP's amazing. You should try negotiating with NYU using your H grant if you're really committed to them, though- I had some success doing that (even after they initially denied my appeal- feel free to PM me if you want more info). If Berkeley matches, reevaluate. Berkeley with $$$ would probably be the best compromise for you given your goals and limitations.

If your COA at Berkeley (instead of GULC) was $55K, and if you had California-specific goals, then your question would be interesting. But with your actual choices, I think the answer is Harvard and it's not really close.

Harvard easily, for reasons so obvious they aren't worth explaining.

I really like it when threads like these get necro'd with a post that just quotes the one above it.usn26 wrote:This thread is from April. Decision's probably made.

Hey, agreeing with each other and patting ourselves on the back for being in line with TLS conventional wisdom is a time honored tradition around here. Don't threaten my right to quote and add nothing. (But in all seriousness without an upvote/downvote system that's kind of the only way we have to reinforce a good comment.)usn26 wrote:HEYHEYHEYHEYHEY! Agreed on annoying necro'd posts though.
