I haven't discussed TLS with randos, just people who I already knew as TLSers. LC did they know who you were? Or were they just casual lurkers?

They're lurkers..or at least that's what they led me to believe. I guess if they lurk this thread they'll figure out who I am!

re: textbooks. Maybe this is too late but w/e you can do this for the later classes.

I rented all of my books, but it was split pretty evenly between the school bookstore (they only rented new 1L books and you can highlight in them) and amazon. I would rent the ones from the bookstore, which you could return within 2 weeks, and then order them on amazon. Sometimes, the amazon ones will be new, and in that case, I would return the bookstore one (I'd just scan stuff until the amazon one came so I could write in it) and keep the amazon one. If not, I'd send the amazon one back. Had I been more on top of it, I could have ordered the amazon ones first, andthen only rented if they weren't new.

(LC39, fyi, if you aren't, you should be renting all of your books. If you bought them, just go back to the bookstore and tell them you would like to switch to renting.)

most people really don't care though. The ones that do figure it out fairly quickly and the rest have no idea.

I am renting my books! Thank you! I bought a couple new (bluebook and Fed Rules of Civ Pro 15-16) but everything else I rented online bc it was so much cheaper.

I feel like yesterday the message I got from speakers at orientation was "law school is small, the profession is small, your reputation is the most valuable thing you have and it will follow you to the grave" and that was a bit intimidating!

Another 2L here. Civ Pro was the hardest class for me to grasp from the readings/class, but ended up being one of my favorites once things came together at the end. Fwiw Barbri has some amazing lectures by Freer online that were very helpful for me for that class. 1L is a grind but it's really not too bad until you're ramping up for exams, which should probably be right after Halloween, and of course when you have memos/briefs due. Try not to stress out too much if you're not understanding things or things aren't really coming together for the next couple months, things do all come together right at the end and you will be fine.

Thanks for this. A question for you: To access Freer online, did you buy the entire Barbri's 1L Student Success Package? There isn't a way to buy only Freer's lectures?

The barbri package is like $50 for 1L year and they have lectures for every class so it's a pretty good deal as far as supplements go. Freer was good, but I thought Epstein for contracts was as good. The property lecture was also worth it. I wouldn't bother with crim or torts though.

You can't just buy the lectures individually. They're loss leaders just to hook you in and lock you up for their bar prep course now that you're $50 pot-committed.

On this note, what proportion of social events should one attend not to seem weird? And, yes, in my case, I know it would probably be best not to attend any.

17 out of every 50 social events, not including lengthy outings or day trips but including semi-social study get togethers

I'm not too successful at not wanting to die, but I still go since I figure that now is going to be the best/easiest time to meet a lot of different people in different sections, because once things heat up it won't be as easy.
