Re: 2Little 2Late
I am a glutton for punishment. All the club stuff I've done this semester aside, I just turned in my Personal Narratives for the State Department. Now I have two papers, 4 finals, and my Boren application to do.

Normally yes, but we did have a poster volunteer just to give, so I can take maybe one person who wants to receive but not give.Hikikomorist wrote:Do we have to give to get?Slytherpuff wrote:TLS Secret Santa 2016. Let's get some 2L participation in here!

Gift exchanges never made sense to me, because there's always going to be waste. People are less selective in purchasing for others, and almost no one knows another person as well as that person knows her/himself.IsThisForReal wrote:Dude. That still doesn't explain why you can't hold up your end of the deal. You want someone to waste their money on you but you are unwilling to waste your money on them. And don't pull some poor grad student bullshit. We're all in the same situation. I literally have 3 part-time jobs plus a regular babysitting gig and I'm still trying to figure out how to pay December's rent.Hikikomorist wrote:Gift exchanges never made sense to me, because there's always going to be waste. I'll admit that I'm more comfortable with other people wasting their money than I am with wasting my own. I don't think that's a particularly radical view, either. I also don't think my being a poor student is bullshit, and your personal anecdote supports the idea that it's a serious concern. If we're all in the same place, then maybe others should be more hesitant about buying for others.IsThisForReal wrote:That still doesn't explain why you can't hold up your end of the deal. If you can't purchase a gift for someone else then don't participate in secret santa. Its a simple concept.Hikikomorist wrote:I'll admit that I'm more comfortable with other people wasting their money than I am with wasting my own. Dude, you have some really twisted views. And just because Dr. R was nice enough to let people sign up to get baked goods without giving anything in return doesn't mean you should expect that. Give nothing, get nothing. Like ITFR says, just don't do Secret Santa but don't expect handouts.Hikikomorist wrote:I'll admit that I'm more comfortable with other people wasting their money than I am with wasting my own. 1- Have a non-depressing and relaxing Christmas.
2- Enjoy how early Christmas promotion begins.
3- If neither of those work, take solace that Starbucks begins the "attack" on Christmas earlier every year.

Re: 2Little 2Late
Spending time with your loved ones? Knowing that people care about you enough to know what kind of things you want as a gift? Seeing the joy on little kids faces as they see santa at the mall or wake up to presents? The general kindness of humans to one another after a really shitty year?Hikikomorist wrote:When you're an adult, what else is there about Christmas that's so great other than the free time?buckiguy_sucks wrote:I can't get over what a terrible opinion this is. Ugh Hikko I know you're just playing the misanthrope trope here to get the response but damn how can you seriously suggest this Christmas is so good.

Yeah clear solution here is to have a great holiday season. Take the pupper to the land up north. Hang with the fam. Don't think about law school.Minnietron wrote:I think I've found the problems:Gray wrote: I have almost never had a non-depressing/stressful christmas. I am of the massively unpopular opinion that I don't give a shit how early Christmas commercials start (this is largely because I don't watch commercials because I don't have tv anyway but also because I love Christmas and don't care how early it starts)

I love Christmas but I also REALLY love Thanksgiving and Halloween. So I just want to celebrate one holiday at a time.

Re: 2Little 2Late
You Christmas haters just need to establish some dope-ass Christmas traditions.
1. Get some decorative tin cans you can stick in storage. Every December, fill them with shit tons of chocolate.
2. Give yourself Christmas presents. Wrap them (or if you're ole 0-waste Hikko, just cover them with dirty laundry. Bonus: you don't have to do that laundry until after the 25th).
3. Watch A Muppets Christmas Carol. Like, lots. Even if it doesn't make you an actually better person (it will), one day when you have kids you can watch it with them and because it's puppets, they might not think it's just lame and dated, like the old Frosty the Snowman cartoon your mom still tries to get you to watch.
4. Refill those chocolate tins.
5. Instead of visiting family, establish a tradition of going to a tropical place during family visiting season. All families will accept tropical vacations as excuses, mostly because they would readily ditch you for one if they could. Note that actually vacationing is optional; it's the thought that counts.
