Congrats!! That's a nice increaseaf0890 wrote:those negotiating, I think this is a good time! CLS increased my offer by 50%--they asked for PDF versions of other scholarship letters, so that helps if you have them.

Hi all,
Welcome to CLS! I'm a current 2L so feel free to reach out with questions. I will do my best to answer them (although it's finals, so... you know). Anyway, two things:
1. When you get here, join Law Revue!
2. Law Revue needs your help to beat NYU. Go vote for your new school: http://abovethelaw.com/2015/04/law-revu ... finalists/ (And get all of your friends to vote too.)

I still haven't gotten my financial aid package, and deposit deadline for another school is 4/30. Called them and they say they can't guarantee to send the award letter before 4/30.

They do say on the accepted students website that you are not required to answer before hearing about financial aid:
"Note: You are not required to accept Columbia’s offer of admission until you have received your award decision, provided your financial aid application was completed in a timely manner."

Yea they told me that the deposit deadline will be extended if I don't get the FA package by 5/1.JFO1833 wrote:They do say on the accepted students website that you are not required to answer before hearing about financial aid:

But I'll have to send in the deposit to the other school with 4/30 deadline (they refused to give me an extension) if Columbia doesn't let me know by tomorrow.
Columbia is my top priority but I can't commit without knowing the award decision. What am I going to do if they don't let me know tomorrow?

After spending the better half of last week bothering cls to give me my financial aid info, they respond today and give me a surprisingly solid amount. A touch more than I got from Penn
Except I mailed my seat deposit to Penn yesterday
Ugh

Re: Columbia Class of 2018
Can you just email or call Penn and say that you withdraw and ask them not to cash the check? The deadline for depositing has not past (right?), so I think if you tell them you are withdrawing and ask them to shred their check they really have to (assuming they have not already cashed it). (Edit: "have to" might not be the right phrase, as I have no idea what the legal implications would be of having signed the acceptance/deposit form, but they really should)Clemenceau wrote:After spending the better half of last week bothering cls to give me my financial aid info, they respond today and give me a surprisingly solid amount. Although I'm sure he's not gonna be teaching 1L Con Law even if he is there. Most likely invite-only 3L seminars and such.

Re: Columbia Class of 2018
Hey, since I still haven't heard about my scholarship award.. if they don't let me know within 3-4 hours, I'll have to make the deposit to another school for which the deposit is due tomorrow.
In this case, would it still count as a double deposit if 1) I submit the deposit to another school, 2) withdraw from that school after I receive award decision from Columbia (assuming that cls provides a decent amount) 3) and then pay the deposit to cls?
If that would be a case of double deposit, I guess I'll have to say goodbye to cls.....

I would call Columbia and the other school and ask them (you could call and not say who you are). They may not have a problem with this, but they might. No reason to take a chance.lc0626 wrote:Hey, since I still haven't heard about my scholarship award.. if they don't let me know within 3-4 hours, I'll have to make the deposit to another school for which the deposit is due tomorrow.

Re: Columbia Class of 2018
So I just received a scholarship increase from NYU (out of nowhere) and want to use this to negotiate with CLS. Should I send my email to the financial aid office or admissions?? I need to do this ASAP and I am hoping they will respond before the deadline. Thanks in advance!

I think financial aid (but I'd copy admissions). I'd also call financial aid to tell them to check their e-mail.wheelock wrote:So I just received a scholarship increase from NYU (out of nowhere) and want to use this to negotiate with CLS. Don't show your hand to the non columbia school. Deposit and carry on negotiations when CLS finally let's you know. It's a risk, but as folks like spivey have stated, it's a small risk.

Does anyone know what time the deposit is due by tomorrow? Cutting it down to the wire here with scholarship negotiations...

For people who have deposited, did you get any sort of confirmation? I've had radio silence since submitting my intent to enroll form/deposit.
