Not that people don't bounce back Ofc. Was more just reflecting on Chicago's "only have 2 grades first quarter" thing. It's less a reflection of who someone is as a student and more a chance to fix things that might have gone wrong IMHO.
Gotcha. So do they still have like Coif? How do they figure that out on a P/H system?

It is nice to just get a few grades back at once, that don't count for that much. (re: Chicago)

On the other hand, it would be nice to have half the stress over with. I feel like we stress just as much over these grades as people at other schools do over a whole semester's worth...and we still have a long way to go.

Oh well. Either way, I passed. I'm happy with that.

It was also very kind of our deputy (faculty) dean to offer to meet with us over the weekend, if we needed to talk about our grades. The faculty here is really great.

No order of the coif, but the top 15%ish are usually approached by the clerkship committee in like June about applying, and the top student in each section gets an award at the end of the first quarter but that's usually kept on the DL. It's weird though because it gets hard to determine who is the top and hard to translate across sections. I think the administration and judges treat it a little like how H does their "GPA" where you take the number of Ps and subtract the number of book prizes and top 15% is less than 1 p remaining.

Probably more info than you were looking for though

It's really not.
Why is it not? Do you not have historical data, or is the data too varied to draw broad inferences from year to year?
We don't have the data (as far as I know), and this quarter's grades combined are worth the same as one of Crim, Torts, Contracts, or Property alone. They basically don't mean anything other than that we didn't fail.

ETA this is the last post I'll make on the matter, I just wanted classmates who don't check email (lol) to know they were up.
Yeah it is only like 20% of your total gpa or whatever for the year.

It was something that makes sls suck. At Chicago they gradually bring you in and you can fix if things went wrong but here you get 5 grades fall quarter, then 3-4 winter, and 3-4 spring (but 3 of the grades winter/spring come from 1 class) so it's hard to correct.
luckily(?) they changed fedlit grading again so that it's only 2 grades now - briefs (winter) and everything else (spring).

w/r/t Chicago, I think a lot of it has to do with keeping a strange, opaque grading system strange and opaque; a percentiles rank would, at the end of the day, render the strangeness moot -- and whether for good or bad (I tend to think for good, but there's huge variance of opinion), that strangeness is highly valued by the administration.

I think that it in some ways, ends up being similar to the kind of P / HP thing: there's no official B+ or A-, just a "this range is an A, this range is a B" and so to some extent you probably benefit if you're on the lower end of one of those ranges, and miss out a bit if you're on the higher end of the range, at least when it comes to people kind of casually looking at your grades.

However, we still get enough granularity that there is a difference within the A and B ranges for things like honors. And personally I like the granularity, because I'm willing to take the bad to get the good. Meaning that if I ever did happen to do well enough in a class to get a 183 or above, I would want to know about it! Even if that also means knowing when I'm below median :/

In other news, will this snow make it sufficiently hard to get to school Monday that classes will be cancelled? I'm ready for a break.

I suspect that my office will have at least a delayed start, if not closed. But, sadly I will not be getting a break from school.
