Does anyone have a sense of how many NU grads that want PI jobs are able to get them? I know NU does a lot to make it easier on PI students with LRAP paying a % of IBR+UI, and the PFILF funding for summer jobs, and the Pritzker Fellowships, etc... but I still have trouble getting a realistic conception of what the chances are for students interested in PI to find employment. I haven't found any good data on this, neither NU-specific or general. PI is my goal and LRAP + Federal loan forgiveness is the way I'm most comfortable "paying off" my debt, but what are the chances that I simply can't find PI employment, assuming I graduate in the top 50% of the class? Any thoughts?

I'm looking at the Scholarship renegotiation application. What if we don't have any offers on the list of schools? I have significantly cheaper options just outside of the ranking they've set as the cut off. Did anybody else have this problem, or is it hopeless?

For scholarship negotiation, would it be better to use large (120k+) offers from the lower ranked schools or smaller offers (but still larger than what NU initially offered) from similarly ranked schools? I unfortunately don't have larger offers from schools more highly ranked than NU. confused.

I would submit one of each because different schools prefer different things and who knows which one will get you a bigger boost. This does depend on how low the school that gave you the larger offer is, though.

I'm going to try to answer this question even though I'm woefully unqualified. Part of the difficulty in answering this question is that the hiring for these jobs are simply idiosyncratic at best, theres a small sample size of people pursuing them and it describes a wide swathe of positions. If you could narrow down what kind of PI you have in mind I may be able to give you a more satisfactory answer. I will say that I think support for people who want to be prosecutors is almost non-existent. If this is what you have in mind you will be cobbling together different practicums in the hope that you will secure credit for all the semesters you work at CCSA (which is what you need to do if you want prosecutorial jobs, even if not at CCSA). That being said, Ken Thompson attended our conviction integrity conference and I know at least one person who used that opportunity to introduce themselves and it went a long way in securing a summer position in his office. So there are things like that they may present themselves, but nothing systematic and the DAs offices don't come interview at school as far as I'm aware (so you'll be going to other area law schools fall of 3L).

The reason for this is probably tied to the history of the CWC and its antagonistic relationship with the CCSA (which is slowly thawing) and the fact its just a less common goal among t-14 students.

If you want to do other kinds of PI, I do think that there is some faculty that is very dedicated to it (i.e. Len Rubinowitz) and I think people work closely with him and other faculty in building relationships that will help them reach their goals. I also think that our clinic is really a top notch set-up. It has a good reputation and offers all sorts of different kinds of legal opportunities there. The clinical profs. have impeccable credentials and often come from long careers in public defenders offices and other places and I suspect that they still have relationships in many of these places. As a result, my sense is the clinic affords opportunities for demonstrating your PI commitment as well as a network into PI jobs.

I know at least one person who graduated last year and went to work for the ACS. Not really sure if that was a one year thing (probably?) but it seemed like a legitimate PI position that could then translate into something else, but its hard to say.

The reality, from my limited and incomplete understanding, is that most PI positions probably don't care about your school. If they're some of the few that do care about your school, then they probably care that it's Harvard or Yale or Stanford. The exception to my mind is that I do think the Brooklyn and Manhattan DAs offices are moving more and more toward recruiting from top schools and i think t-14 is an advantage, but there's nothing special about NU, and indeed the institutional support for prosecutorial work is very limited as I mentioned.

That's just one uninformed biglaw sellout's point of view.

tl;dr-Clinic is potentially an advantage for people targeting PI, but I'm hard-pressed to say that NU has any PI placement advantage over any of its peers. Probably disadvantage if you want to be a prosecutor.


ETA: Honestly if its really important to you I would consider e-mailing Len Rubinowitz and asking him about PI opportunities from NU. He would almost definitely be willing to discuss it with you.

ETA2: I should also add that the clinic often partners with firms like Loevey and Loevey etc so if that's the sort of PI you have in mind, it's good for building relationships with people at those places too.
