HLS HOUSING:
Hi everybody - and congrats! Current 2L here.
My roommate is graduating this year and I'm (likely) moving in with a friend, so we're looking for somebody to take over the lease of our BEAUTIFUL apartment.
We'd be happy to let you see the place when you're available during ASW (or over skype or something). Cannot reiterate enough how much I've loved living here.

It is beautiful! I would be all over that if it were a one bedroom!abbyvero wrote:HLS HOUSING:

Has anyone been contacted by professors? In my interview JS2, i was told to expect to hear from a professor or two with common interests...
The book was, of course, way cool. Just wanted to know if I would got a formal invite for convo like professors have done from some other schools.

I heard something similar from my interviewer, and recently got an email from her with some info about the area I mentioned. Idk if that's all I should expect to receive, or if a prof will actually contact me. Harvard admits something like 900 applicants, so it might not be realistic that faculty would personally email each..Fred Norris wrote:Has anyone been contacted by professors? I think that was a targeted mass mailer you got. I got the same thing. The professor e-mails are going to be targeted mass mailers too. I don't think any professor is going to individually write you. I'm just assuming they have a template written and admissions sends them out from a given professor based upon criteria.

Last year profs did send out individual e-mails to admitted students. Unfortunately for me, mine was from Dean Minow and it looked kinda boilerplate, so I thought it was just a mass-mail thing and ignored it. You shouldn't do that.

Are we supposed to respond? And say what, just thanks for your email?HorseThief wrote:Last year profs did send out individual e-mails to admitted students. I figured for my book, which looks really interesting, I was just gonna have a few cups of coffee, sit down and read it in one sitting, and then reach out. I can pretty much already tell I could have a real convo.LetsGoMets wrote:Are we supposed to respond? I responded to a boilerplate from a different university with a relevant question (it was from the head of the scholarship group). Still didn't hear a response a week later.

Make up a question to ask? Ask them what their favorite part of HLS is? Idk, doesn't need to be too in-depth. I just think it's a great opportunity and I wished I hadn't passed it up.LetsGoMets wrote:Are we supposed to respond? For those who have received their books in the mail, would you guys mind sharing the titles of the different books you got? Thanks!

What's the word on renting a car for ASW?

You shouldn't really need to. Plus, parking is absolutely terrible (especially now), so you'd probably find it more of a burden than a help.Fred Norris wrote:What's the word on renting a car for ASW?

Also, got an email from a HLS prof... but don't know what to say to them...
Same about the e-mail, especially because the prof is in an area that I don't really plan on working in although it is tangentially related to my interests. Is it rude not to reply? I imagine they get tons of e-mails a day, so I felt like I would be burdening them if I didn't have anything insightful to contribute.

Did anyone from the 1/20 acceptance wave receive a book?

Not really... think about it:sneakyleo wrote:My book arrived today! (I'm from the 12/15 wave.)
It must be so expensive to send books to every admit!
Almost everyone who received a book also paid an $85 application fee. In terms of revenue from applications alone, Harvard is still for sure better off than all but perhaps 2 of the T-14. From Columbia downwards, their admit pool is overwhelmingly composed of those who put no money into their admissions process. Even if Harvard sent 3 books, they would still be making more per admit than all peer schools except Stanford and Yale.
If HLS offered fee waivers and sent books, then we could be talking (leaving aside of course the issue of the fact that Harvard has tons of money to spend). Also, Harvard sends out far less promotional material than other schools for admits. Penn, for example, goes all out with packets etc. Harvard isn't shelling out for graphic designers like that etc.
In short, you got a book instead of a fee waiver.
