Although I have a Dillard, it is not likely that i will be attending. Hopefully that frees up some money for some other people!!!

A friend of mine went to admitted students yesterday and spoke with one of the heads of admissions and they told her they were almost certain that no money would be give at all, even after the first seat deposit. Just a heads up for people who are considering double depositing and holding out for UVA.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
I had a fun time and enjoyed getting to know some of the professors and talking with some former supreme court clerks. All the students were pleasant to talk to and very friendly. Was glad to learn about the strength of the UVA alumni network, too. Also tried to convince a friend there who has a Dillard and is leaning towards attending another school to somehow cede me his Dillard scholarship. Don't think it will work, but it's worth a try.

It actually convinced me not to go. However, I totally bought what they were selling-- the people were nice, the academics were legit, the campus is pretty and the school seems fun.potatoes wrote:For those of you who went, what did you think of the ASOH?
I'm just old and lame, I guess, because another three years of tomfoolery sounds pretty unappealing to me. Not that everyone was an alcoholic or anything, but there was definitely a "work hard, play hard" vibe. I'm in a committed relationship with someone several years older than me, and neither of us can handle more than a few nights of partying a month, so even the idea of attending made me tired, haha.
I also quickly found that what I thought it as a minor preference for a city is actually a major one, mostly for personal reasons.
So.overall, I'm happy I went and was able to narrow my list, but I also felt like I was one of the only ones who was LESS interested by the end of the weekend. Everyone else seemed to love what they saw.

I had similar feelings, but probably won't discount UVA quite yet. The strength of their clerkship program/general academic stuff was well-received, but the fact that people are so young (in comparison) was a bit of a turn-off.AnyoneLived wrote:It actually convinced me not to go. I'm actually young (took two years off), and the maturity itself didn't bother me-- even the K-JDs seemed pretty well adjusted. I kind of got the feeling that people could get trashed without being idiots, which is good. But I could definitely have different standards of maturity than you-- and I was turned off by the amount of people mentioning/bringing their parents.
My problem was more specifically that several students made comments like "if you don't like to party, you maybe shouldn't go to UVA," and one of the current students on my panel talked about how he doesn't drink much and finds it to be pretty difficult-- only to be shouted down by the rest of the panel, telling him to at least participate in the big drinking events even if he doesn't get "that drunk" because that's just "part of UVA." Left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.
But yeah, the career options were awesome and my scholarship was so uber generous. It's hard to pass that up.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
I would definitely echo what some of you are saying about the campus culture being a turn-off. I went to undergrad at a mediocre public party-fest and hated it. UVA isn't a mediocre school by any means, but "work hard, play hard" just isn't my sort of deal. I'm not "old", but I don't drink at all, or like to 'party' in the collegiate sense.
That said, I really liked Charlottesville, and would definitely prefer it to Chicago/NYC/Philly. Their clerkship numbers are great. They aren't overly focused on Big Law, which is the feel I've gotten from Columbia/Penn/Northwestern. Every interaction I've had with admissions/financial aid/etc. has been very pleasant.
We'll see.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
It did seem to me, too, that many people there were really young and going straight through from undergrad, which, being older, made me feel a bit out-of-place at first. I felt better after talking to my student liaison, however, who was a 27-year-old 1L living with his fiancee near campus. I asked him about the drinking culture there; he said it wasn't as bad as you would expect and he hadn't felt excluded, though the 22/23-year-olds arriving directly from undergrad who go bar-hopping almost nightly were a bit too intense for him. He emphasized the relationship 1Ls develop with your small section, as did some people from Lambda I talked to. Seems to be somewhere where whether you go drink nightly whatever the young folks drink (Fireball?), go out only on occasion, or just spend weekends playing Settlers of Catan and knitting stuff, you can maintain cordiality and friendship with your peers all the same.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
Hey guys congrats of your acceptances.
Current 1L here, I just thought I would interject and say that don't feel like you have to drink and be into partying to attend UVA. I remember being concerned about this as a 0L and posting and asking about it myself, now I look back and laugh at how worried I was. I also remember being concerned about this after my ASW experience.
I don't drink much at all and moved to Cville with my SO. I have not had any issues socially at all and have actually found that a lot of other student don't drink either. I have a great group of friends here, some drink and some don't, and we still all hang out and have fun. There are also at least 3 people in my section who have a family and kids and don't go out much but nonetheless fit in very well.
All that is to say that I wouldent worry to much about the drinking culture at UVA when deciding whether to attend or not. If you like Cville and like the school generally I think you'd be happy. I came to UVA for the academics and have found my other fears about the social scene to be unwarranted.
Just my two cents. Hope it helps.

I really enjoyed the ASOH. I think the actual part where I have to take classes is going to be not so fun (I really dislike the whole cold calling thing), but the people were all very friendly and career services seemed really on top of it. Charlottesville was nice enough, though I didn't see anything special about it - maybe I just need to do more exploring. I did find housing prices pretty terrifying. I may need to try and find a roommate, haha. But overall, a very positive impression and I will probably be attending UVA this fall.

I didn't attend the ASOH, but I visited campus a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't a huge fan of Charlottesville, but I suppose it will grow on me. Even though I don't drink, I'm not too worried about the "drinking culture" of UVA, personally. I figure I'm going to UVA for school, so that's the most important part. What everyone chooses to do in their free time isn't a huge deal to me as long as I enjoy the law school itself (and as long as I have a job when I graduate, haha).

I loved it. I was wavering between UVA and Uchicago and this made my decision so easy, especially since they were also offering me more money than Chicago.potatoes wrote:For those of you who went, what did you think of the ASOH?

So if I haven't received any information on financial aid yet, should I assume I'm getting nothing? It seems strange they wouldn't even notify me about loan eligibility...

I still haven't received anything either despite being well before the priority deadline. There was an issue with my fafsa and they said they would resolve it and get back to me like 3 weeks ago...still nothing. I even emailed last week with no response. Could this possibly be because they ran out of funds and are stalling?BruiserWoods wrote:So if I haven't received any information on financial aid yet, should I assume I'm getting nothing? For those who know they are heading to UVA this year, where d you plan to live? Personally I heard a lot of good things about The Pavilion but I'm not sure if I want to pay that for rent.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
Yeah, plenty of people do not "party" regularly. I would say less than a third of the entire population goes out more twice a week or more (including weekends), and probably about half go out once a week. During 1L those numbers are even lower. There are certain events that are somewhat part of the UVA culture, but those happen like once a semester and plenty of people don't drink at them either.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
