Re: University of Pennsylvania c/o 2018 Admits
Congratulations NewLs!
When you're doing 2L SA recruiting, take advantage of regional interviews and profit... since they don't take up any of your OCI slots. I just posted an explanation of our great regional interview program in CA here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 9#p8300999. I hope that's helpful.
Finding a job in CA seems like it was much easier this year than it was in previous years, but I still don't think it's on-par with your chances at getting a NYC SA. There are so many more SA jobs in NY than in CA, even taking into account the additional schools feeding into NY. Most people who wanted CA definitely had NY screeners as well just in case they didn't get anything in CA.
That said, a lot of CA firms I spoke with were happy to have Penn students (with ties) to round out their summer classes. It seemed like a lot of the top firms were interested in recruiting more non-Stanford/Cal/UCLA/USC students, but some were a bit worried about their yield because they have lost offerees to NY firms in the past. I don't want to out myself, but happy to go into more details regarding CA recruiting through PM if you're interested.
Like AlwaysPlayTheFox, penn278, and Clearly, I'm also a current student (2L) and happy to answer any questions you guys might have about school/places to eat/drink/live/stay sane.
All of the CP&P counselors will probably give people looking at non-NYC biglaw the same (good) general advice, which is to make sure you establish ties and try to work in that market during the summer after 1L. While there isn't a specific person at CP&P dedicated to helping people targeting non-NYC biglaw, it's okay because it's not really necessary.pulstar1 wrote:7.1% of 2013 Penn Law grads are working in California according to Penn's website. But I guess we can't really use this metric to say anything about how "well" (or how effectively) Penn places in Cali because we don't know the ratio of the number of students that get employed in Cali vs. the number that want employment there.UCLABruins2015 wrote:Hi guys! just had a question about placement. How well does Penn place in California?

Im from NorCal and Ive heard the same thing from multiple people. A NorCal friend of mine did her UG and LS at UMich and just got herself a job in SF BigLaw. I know it's an anecdote, but I still think the general consensus is that being from Cali should make it considerably easier to get Cali BigLaw after doing LS on the eastcoast/midwest. If you're someone with strong ties, I *think* your chances at California BigLaw should be around the same as your chances at NYC BigLaw from Penn. Hopefully someone who isn't a 0L can weigh in on this.UCLABruins2015 wrote:The lawyers I've talked to tell me that it shouldnt be a problem for my case since I'm from Socal and went to college in LA so I have ties, but I was curious to see what percentage of Penn law grads choose to practice in California.
I haven't looked it up, but I would be shocked if they didn't.UCLABruins2015 wrote:I'm also curious if the Career services office at Penn law has advisors who help people targeting non-NYC biglaw

Most people live fairly close to campus during 1L. However, I recommend against university housing (in sansom towers) because it's far too expensive for what it is. You can find really affordable options in West Philly, but I wouldn't go west of the high-40th streets unless you're particularly adventurous. There's a good contingency of law students living in nearby private apartment complexes such as Domus, Left Bank, and Evo. Most 2Ls/3Ls explore a little more and live in other parts of the city like Center City, South Philly, or Northern Liberties.grizzlybear wrote:anyone have any insights as to housing? where do most law students (and med and other grad students) live? areas as well as specific complexes?
Preview day is just a shorter/one day version of ASW. You shouldn't go to both because the programming will likely be very repetitive. The admissions office typically recommends that you go to ASW because more potential classmates will be there and everything isn't rushed. It's tough because not everyone will end up attending, but I met some of my good friends at Penn til this day during ASW.lc39 wrote: Does anyone know what Preview Day is and how it differs from ASW?

The invites for the named schollies should be out in a couple of weeks right? I think in the last admit thread people reported Wilson, Levy, and Toll invites in the last 2-3 days of Jan.lc39 wrote:Early March, at least according to the email. Stipend: $100 for travel within the Northeast, $200 from farther distances; limited to students for whom visiting "will prove an uncommonly demanding financial burden"Mack.Hambleton wrote:Checkin in

Checking in and such. That's comparable with most of the non-HYS top 14. Put together a quick list from the 509s:Mack.Hambleton wrote:According to last years stats Penn had a 26% yield rate. Hm
Yale: 78.4%
Harvard: 61.3%
Stanford: 43.9%
Columbia: 31.6%
Chicago: 23.3%
NYU: 24.2%
Penn: 26.2%
UVA: 32.3%
Berkeley: 23.9%
Duke: 19.7%
Michigan: 24.9%
Northwestern: 24.3%
Cornell: 16.7%
Georgetown: 24.7%
Haven't gotten any follow-up emails after the call yesterday, although my SC changed last night.

Yeah, thought so too, 4th behind YHS, on par with Columbia. Meanwhile GULC gives out 2300 offers but their class size is 580 so they do better than Chi and NYUMack.Hambleton wrote:+1LetsGoMets wrote:Checking in and such. They admit more through ED, and the Virginia resident requirement prob accounts for a decent number of locals either wanting to stay local, or not having better options.Mack.Hambleton wrote:+1LetsGoMets wrote:Checking in and such.
