For those not at ASW/not in the finaid Q&A today -- sounds like merit offers should start going out next week.

Fun times, hopefully it all works out and I can be relaxing in sunny Berkeley this time next year.strugglebus wrote:For those not at ASW/not in the finaid Q&A today -- sounds like merit offers should start going out next week.

in the student panel breakout: They said that employers are all aware of the drawbacks in not having letter grades and that employers don't get the transcripts until you come to the interview (you bring the transcript to the interview)

Thanks for the info!zaetoroftheprotoss wrote:in the student panel breakout: They said that employers are all aware of the drawbacks in not having letter grades and that employers don't get the transcripts until you come to the interview (you bring the transcript to the interview)
Am I correct to think this is a good thing because it prevents transcripts from precluding interviews?

They didn't say explicitly but I would say this is a fair assumption from the tone of the response.mwonka wrote:Thanks for the info!zaetoroftheprotoss wrote:in the student panel breakout: They said that employers are all aware of the drawbacks in not having letter grades and that employers don't get the transcripts until you come to the interview (you bring the transcript to the interview)

Shout-out to the person in front of me at the LRAP panel (if I remember right) who was reading TLS on their phone.
(What are your guys's thoughts, for those of you at ASW?)

I was sold, but trying not to get too enamored before reality hits with scholarship offers hopefully this week.middlebear wrote:Shout-out to the person in front of me at the LRAP panel (if I remember right) who was reading TLS on their phone.

I had a great time, what a cool place. In the same boat on waiting for scholarship info but as of now Boalt is my #1middlebear wrote:Shout-out to the person in front of me at the LRAP panel (if I remember right) who was reading TLS on their phone.

I really liked the people (at least the law school people - the hordes of hipster undergrads will take some adjusting to). Waiting on money, which is going to probably be the tie-breaker for me.
...and I spent today in SF mainly just eating all the great food and drinking all the great coffee on the water. Unf.

Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Law Class of 2018
I met with a financial aid counselor yesterday who said scholarship offers would start going out near the end of next week, and that process would continue through April. After April, your chances of receiving a scholarship are diminished because most of the offers are committed and accepted. Also said that financial aid packages would start going out the beginning of April. Later than I thought - I thought they were going out last week so people could have that info during ASW. It seems like most people (on here and who I met at ASW) are waiting on that before making a final decision.

Got an email soliciting my application for the Phoenix Fellowship (despite the fact that I am not a woman of color) while at the gym and almost fell off the treadmill thinking it was my scholarship package. All this waiting is not kind to my nerves.

Seriously, the email's title got me extraordinarily excited when I glanced at my phone this morning. Such a let down!slurpy wrote:Got an email soliciting my application for the Phoenix Fellowship (despite the fact that I am not a woman of color) while at the gym and almost fell off the treadmill thinking it was my scholarship package. This happened to me too (also not a POC). I thought perhaps that Berkeley had made an assumption about my race (most of my substantive work experience is Civil Rights/PI related) and spent a good 10 minutes savoring the irony. Apparently not though.slurpy wrote:Got an email soliciting my application for the Phoenix Fellowship (despite the fact that I am not a woman of color) while at the gym and almost fell off the treadmill thinking it was my scholarship package. Could be true - all of my work experience is also in PI.IngmarKurosawa wrote:This happened to me too (also not a POC). No PI for me and not a woman of color...I think it might have been a random blastslurpy wrote:Could be true - all of my work experience is also in PI.IngmarKurosawa wrote:This happened to me too (also not a POC). Yeah just got third email, for thing I am not eligible for.Mack.Hambleton wrote:They sent me three emails about this same thing lol
Regarding scholarships though - I didn't get anything from a school on their official matching list, but students told me to submit what I got anyway. I'm wondering if it's better to do this before the first round of offers goes out, or after? For most schools I think it would be after (you don't want to potentially lowball yourself), but from what I've gleaned Berkeley has a smaller pool of money so you want to get in on it asap. Do other folks have thoughts on this?

As a white male with a strong IP background and no interest in PI work, I'm pretty sure there was no rhyme or reason to the recipients.sheishkabob wrote:No PI for me and not a woman of color...I think it might have been a random blastslurpy wrote:Could be true - all of my work experience is also in PI.IngmarKurosawa wrote:This happened to me too (also not a POC). Never heard of anyone getting a matching offer from schools not on the list. You actually have to select the school from a drop-down list on the app so idk what you would do if the school's not there...arose928 wrote:Yeah just got third email, for thing I am not eligible for.Mack.Hambleton wrote:They sent me three emails about this same thing lol

Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Law Class of 2018
I think earlier's better; they're pretty open that they do run out of money, and at least one person reported in an older thread that Berkeley told them they wouldn't be matching because they intended to give him a higher amount. It sounds, at least, like they won't let you lowball yourself.arose928 wrote:Regarding scholarships though - I didn't get anything from a school on their official matching list, but students told me to submit what I got anyway.
