RSVPing yes to all the events, staying at the Inn at Darden, flying in from almost-Canada on Wednesday night. Looking forward to visiting and checking out the campus and C'ville!

If anyone is able to successfully negotiate an increase in $$, please post or PM! I'm still waiting on offers before I try my hand, but I'd appreciate any signs that money is starting to get freed up.

Well, looks like I'm not going to be able to come to the open house. Bummer
I will most likely see you all in the fall though!

So if our award letter shows only loans and no scholarships, that means we're not being offered merit aid?
If so, wow. I got my hopes up for nothing.
EDIT: I also have a $0 expected family contribution; so much for need-aid.

Some people have said that UVA told them they have currently exhausted their resources.. Hopefully people will start withdrawing and freeing up $$$.

Yeah, I love how there's no sense of irony at all in listing 50-70k in loans as financial aid.Lightworks wrote:So if our award letter shows only loans and no scholarships, that means we're not being offered merit aid?

Well there goes my hopes for getting anything through negotiation. Your stats are a far cry from mine.Lightworks wrote:So if our award letter shows only loans and no scholarships, that means we're not being offered merit aid?

IIRC a similar thing happened last cycle where they were like "we ran out of money!!" but im not sure if it was true or they were just saying thatWinston1984 wrote:But last cycle this many people weren't left with nothing for this long, were they?Mack.Hambleton wrote:mid to late april should be when $$$ opens up. i was offered a dillard april 1st last year fwiwWinston1984 wrote:Some people have said that UVA told them they have currently exhausted their resources.. There are reasons to think that it's legit, at least this cycle.Mack.Hambleton wrote:IIRC a similar thing happened last cycle where they were like "we ran out of money!!" but im not sure if it was true or they were just saying thatWinston1984 wrote:But last cycle this many people weren't left with nothing for this long, were they?Mack.Hambleton wrote:mid to late april should be when $$$ opens up. i was offered a dillard april 1st last year fwiwWinston1984 wrote:Some people have said that UVA told them they have currently exhausted their resources.. Re: UVA Class of 2018
last cycle i thought they were saying that in april as well when most people had withdrawn from their money tho
ETA: theyve given out 29 dillards so far and 30 last cycle, so it doesnt seem too different other than the fact that they gave a lot to lower numbers this cycle

Re: UVA Class of 2018
Got to hope that they're just being super cautious given the relatively weaker-numbered candidates that they've offered Dillards to. Hopefully Stanford or Chicago snag a bunch of those 3.9/170's.
At the risk of sounding like a complete tool, I'm sorta wondering why they even bothered to admit me with a $0 offer. That just seems really dumb for a YP school to do. I'm sure they have dozens of other candidates waiting who might be willing to attend at sticker.
Did anyone who got their offer today receive scholarship money?

Added a new poll.
Sorry for those of you who didn't receive $$ - you all definitely deserve it, but UVA is being kinda weird this cycle unfortunately.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
I emailed the Financial Aid office, and got this as a response:
"In all candor, at this point our scholarship budget is largely tapped out, and I do not anticipate very many new scholarship offers, based on merit or need, being made. I am sure this is disappointing news, but I also want to be as transparent with you as possible."
Well, so long UVA. It's been hugely disappointing.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
also received no scholarship and was expecting one... if more money magically opens up later (which I kind of doubt), would they just go ahead and send out scholarships to those of us who didn't get one, or would we need to ask/negotiate for it first?

I would be taking spivey's advice and staying on their radar/ asking for more/demonstrating interest/letting them know about other offers.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
Is there a way to do this outside of going to ASW and such? I've always heard you're supposed to hold off on asking for more money until you've got all your competing offers lined up.Skool wrote:I would be taking spivey's advice and staying on their radar/ asking for more/demonstrating interest/letting them know about other offers.

Re: UVA Class of 2018
Hey everyone,
I have been a lurker on TLS for quite a while and it looks like I'll be attending UVA this fall. Anyways, I have already applied for a 2 bed/2 bath apartment in Ivy Gardens and am looking for a roommate to fill the other room and to split rent with. I'm a male coming straight out of undergrad, so if you or anyone you know is interested in possibly rooming together, go ahead and message me on here so we can discuss!! Hope to see y'all in Charlottesville this fall!

Re: UVA Class of 2018
I really wanted to go to ASW but it's $550 just to fly one way to where I live (spring break in my area) plus the extra hotel and taxi charges, so I'll have to pass.
Might try to go another weekend when it's more affordable to check it out.
Am I really screwing up by not going? Considering that UVA is a top choice for me

Re: UVA Class of 2018
I think you're fine visiting on a weekend other than ASW. I live across the country and visited a few weeks ago (since it was cheaper than travelling for ASW) and I'm glad I did. It was nice because there weren't very many people visiting, so I had more opportunities to ask questions and talk with students than I probably would have had at ASW.Cradle6 wrote:I really wanted to go to ASW but it's $550 just to fly one way to where I live (spring break in my area) plus the extra hotel and taxi charges, so I'll have to pass.

I will be there this weekend!
Although I have a Dillard, it is not likely that i will be attending. Hopefully that frees up some money for some other people!!!
