Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2018
We pick fall and spring classes for the coming year all at once, around late May. There's a stupid two-step process: 'pre-registration' and 'registration.' Pre-reg is where all the action takes places - you rank your top choice classes and alternates, and then regular registration a month later lets you clean up the mess by filling in or altering your schedule with whatever's remaining.Hand wrote:When do you pick your spring classes as a 2- or 3L? I would assume it's during that same period that we have to pick, whatever it is.Gray wrote:I mean we haven't even picked a curriculum yet, I think this is well ahead of us.zacharus85 wrote:Question for you lot: Do you know if you pick your spring elective up front or during your fall semester?
Evening student so never had to bother with the usual schedule. Probably a premature question for you guys but eh.

Not up front. Registrar will make a big deal when it happens. Don't remember exactly when, but it was at a time when I at least knew what the fuck admin law was, so it couldn't have been during initial orientation. They just hand you your pre-printed schedule for that anyway, no chance for input.zacharus85 wrote:Question for you lot: Do you know if you pick your spring elective up front or during your fall semester?

It would be nice if all the schools. -- or at least the ones I applied to -- had large seat deposit amounts like GULC. It would certainly make for an easier time on the WL

What is the best 1L elective in which one can comfortably give the fewest fucks? I'm fresh out, alas.GULCPerson wrote:Not up front. Registrar will make a big deal when it happens. Yup, and still too expensive. I pay $2460 a month for everything in a way nicer place than Gewirz.supersplittysplitter wrote:Aren't utilities and Internet included in the price for gewriz? Or is it still too expensive even with those things included?Bfalcon wrote:2L at GULC here taking questions. Career-wise, I'm heading to big law in D.C. this summer. I'm also a veteran and on the board of the Military Law Society at the law center. Happy to help connect y'all to some of the vets here at school. NOTE: the MLS will be hosting a happy hour next Thursday at the Billy Goat beside the law school. Time: 8:00 pm (right after the dinner).
On another note, if you are tight on funds or would like to live in a nicer place, I would NOT recommend Gewirz. The only good thing about Gewirz is its proximity. You can find better places for better prices in NOMA, Capitol Hill or Chinatown (better place, more money). All those areas are close. Eg: I pay $2400 a month for a brand new 2 bedroom apartment (my roommate pays half) in NOMA, 15 minute walk from the law school. Balcony, top floor, corner apartment.
Cheers,

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2018
I'm not on the GI Bill, but if you have questions about that, please PM me for more details. Yes, people take out huge loans. For the most part, people are happy with their decision. If they are unhappy it's because a) they fucked up their first year and partied too hard instead of getting good grades (or just aren't suited for the type of thinking involved in law school) b) got decent grades but have no personality and can't get jobs or c) realized that they really don't like the law (usually happens to people with less life experience). I'd say that 95% have varying degrees of happiness and 5% are unhappy. In my class of 600, I haven't run across more than 10 people or so who are unhappy.buckiguy_sucks wrote:Bfalcon: are you on GI bill? Do you have a lot of classmates taking out huge loans? Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2018
We picked them in late October IIRC, ranking them pretty similar to how pre-registration happens, except with only 4 classes.zacharus85 wrote:What is the best 1L elective in which one can comfortably give the fewest fucks? In terms of what to give no fucks about, I've heard literally nothing about International Criminal Law, which makes me think it's not a lot of work. Admin is packed with gunners, I know a few people in Reg State who say it's heavy workload but not too hard, and regular international law is packed with the very politically active, philosophical "save the world" types, so while I'm not sure on workload, it's definitely a class where you'll hear quite a lot from strongly opinionated people. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's a good or a bad thing haha.
Honestly though, I love admin, but got an amazing teacher, and it's definitely not a class to sleep through.

If we've already deposited should we start sending our tax forms and the other documents listed on MyAccess? Have people started doing those things yet?

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2018
Pretty sure it depends on who the professors are. I took International Law with Professor Brooks, which was Story Time About How International Law Isn't A Thing with Professor Brooks, but she's a good speaker and has in interesting background so it was fine, and the exam wasn't stressful. As mentioned, lots of politically opinionated people dominate the conversation, so it's easy to space out and blend into the background.zacharus85 wrote:What is the best 1L elective in which one can comfortably give the fewest fucks? No idea who the professors next year will be though, and I imagine that makes the biggest difference.

I feel like the on-campus housing is easy/convenient, but I'd prefer to just get a studio elsewhere if I can swing it. What have y'all decided to do, and why did you decide to live on/off campus?
I'll reluctantly be doing Gewirz. I was a little underwhelmed when I saw the setup on ASW, but it's just too convenient to pass up for 1L.

Maybe you can do it, but do you really want to? Between school and being at home you'll be spending almost all of your time on the same tiny little patch of the city, surrounded by fellow law students. Not everybody's idea of a good time.WhiskeyAndCupcakes wrote:Yes, this is EXACTLY why it's not my preference. But, I could do it for 9 months, I guess.

Re: Georgetown Law Class of 2018
Anyone planning on renting in the 'burbs and taking the train in? I've seen multiple bedroom/multiple bath houses (yes, houses) on Craigslist in Rockville, MD, for well under $2000/month. Especially since I have kids and the space/yard would be an incredible perk, the 45 minute train commute seems like a small price to pay.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
