I got my housing assignment for Thursday, kinda surprised it's not on campus. I would have preferred to be closer to the law center

Haha! I was wondering the same thing - after wearing a uniform for 20 years - I have to learn how to dress myself!

I think in the past they have invited people to apply for scholarship consideration, but even if you don't get an invite, you can solicit the invite. Then you have to write essays and stuff.

Admitted students reception in NYC on February 4th.

Do you have any idea when that invite normally comes out? I definitely want to do everything that I can to make sure I get one. GULC has always been my top choice but I've gotten offers from other schools that are going to be hard to refuse.

I think March, in past years? There's a chance they'll do it differently this year because they will probably need to step up their scholarship game to prevent medians from slipping. That's just optimistic speculation though.

Let's hope so. March would definitely be pushing it, especially since I already have really fantastic scholarships from my second and third choice. I would just love to finally be able to the dozens of people who ask me where I'm going a definite instead of just telling them I'm waiting on money. Sigh.

Here are some highlights from the open house today for those interested:

- The Supreme Court Docent tour was pretty cool - it was mostly just a typical tour. However, the last half hour was spent with a Supreme Court Fellow (2012 GULC grad). He gave a nice little brief about the court and talked about how his experience at GULC led him to his current gig.

- Andy is a pretty charming dude - can a guy refer to another guy as charming???? - well that's what he was.

- The admits I met were pretty impressive folks - I was amazed by the diversity as well.

- Seth Waxman, former solicitor general and Supreme Court superman, gave a 30 minute brief about his time as solicitor general and the Supreme Court moot program at GULC (which now moots 100% of Supreme Court cases). He pointed out that GULC is the only top law school that you can talk about an upcoming Supreme Court case in your ConLaw class at 9 and then go watch the actual argument at the Supreme Court at noon.

- The alumni panel was the highlight for me - they had 4 alum from '91, '00, '06, & '08. Two are currently partners at big firms ('00&06), one is the Chief Litigation Counsel for the Bureau of Consumer Protection and was a Public Defender ('91), & the last one is the Chief Counsel for the ABA Death Penalty Panel, a former Public Defender as well, and before law school was the Executive Director of the Innocence Project - yeah she's a public interest law stud ('08). They gave great, real world advice about law school, working as a lawyer, their experiences in the legal profession, and what led them to where they are today. Very engaging panel!

- They had snacks in between events (best hot cocoa I think I have ever had) and a great dinner where we got to interact with current law school students and others that work at the law school. I had a very interesting 1L and a Nun at my table. The Nun was probably the sweetest lady I have ever met.

I don't think anyone should make a law school decision based on the admit day - but it's a great experience - I really enjoyed the day! I'll give you an update about tomorrow if anyone finds this helpful!

-lots of parents -- LOTS (like 30% brought one)!
-student attire: business formal to jeans/sweater (no sneakers)
-everyone was very friendly!

So day two was very cool - here are the highlights:

- We started off with a financial aid presentation which focused on needs based aid. Merit based aid wasn't really discussed - that's run by admissions - get a high LSAT score if you want that. Need based financial aid is determined independently from merit based aid and is entirely based on your financial need in relation to other students. They don't care at all about your GPA or LSAT score for need based financial aid. Basically, about 1/3 of the students get need based assistance. From my understanding - the way it works is they compare everyone's financial situation and the financial situation of their parents to determine who needs it the most. So they compare Suzy, John and Tim and decide who really needs it. All kinds of factors go into that decision. Maybe Suzy's parents make more than John and Tim's but they have 3 other kids going to college at the same time - Suzy might win out. My disclaimer really quick - this is my impression of the need based financial policy based on the presentation and questions from the session I sat in on - not any kind of official information - call and ask for specific questions! They went into the LRAP program for those that go into govt or 503b work - LRAP seems to make public service a viable option for those that are going to take on debt. The person that gave the brief was the Assistant Director of Financial Aid and he really knew his stuff - he provided real, honest answers and seemed like an all around good person that will try to figure out a way to get you help if you need it. Oh and the financial aid office also provides financial counseling for buying a house, car, investing, etc - for alums and students.

- The Faculty Moot & Discussion of Supreme Court Case event was, by far, the highlight of the open house for me. As mentioned in my previous post, ALL Supreme Court cases are practiced at Georgetown before they get argued at the Supreme Court and students are welcome to watch. This presentation was a simulation of one of those moots. As many of you know - I'm an old guy (was asked if I was faculty a few times) - I have many, many years in the military - I've met some pretty impressive and important people in my career - I'm not easily impressed. I was blown away by this event and the quality of people that they had on the stage. They mooted a recent Supreme Court case - Elonis v. United States (very interesting 1st amendment case - that has already been argued and gets decided soon). A 4 person panel made up of faculty acted as judges and two professors argued each side. One of the acting judges has argued 36 supreme court cases - who, by the way, might end up being on of your 1L professors. The others also argued numerous cases before the Supreme Court before joining the faculty. I don't think there was a person in the room that wasn't awe struck - no matter what path you plan on taking (corporate, govt, jag, public service) - you left that room thinking I might want to go into litigation - and were like - wow these could really be my professors? Hopefully, they do this in the March Open House.

- We had a Q&A lunch with current students - all 3 I was with were pretty impressive and gave honest, informative answers to questions for an hour.

- After that we got a tour of the campus and got to talk to members of different student organizations. My tour was by a 1L that was an FBI agent before law school - impressive folks running around this place.

It was a great day - happy I came. To me - Georgetown's appeal is the access you have to all that DC has to offer from a legal prospective. Hope this is helpful, or at least a little entertaining, to those that couldn't attend.

Kinda - day really depends on what you decide to attend. If you go to the admitted student's website and go to the "Meet Us" section and then click on the January Open House link you can see our sked. I am assuming it will be similar. Nothing is mandatory and you can leave at any time. There were people coming and going the whole time.
