So who's outlining

I 'borrowed' some from a clubs website that were supposed to only be for club members. And got the rest from 2/3Ls with high grades.

I thought the point of outlining was to go through the process of outlining, not just to have an outline

Ugh, I wish UChi wouldn't have presentations like this.

Spoiler alert: there will still be gunners.

There are some folks who I think it will benefit. Other stuff about workplace attitudes etc also.

Besides, we get out early today.

I'm starting with an outline that some super-organized Microsoft word savant put together, and just editing it with my own notes as I go along. Best of both worlds, hopefully..

I'm starting with an outline that some super-organized Microsoft word savant put together, and just editing it with my own notes as I go along. Best of both worlds, hopefully..

Everyone does have their own way that works for them. But I will say everyone I know that did very well made their own outlines from scratch.

Other people's outlines are most useful for:

1) cross-checking your own outline for accuracy

2) filling in gaps

ONLY use them if they are from the same professor and if the person made AT LEAST an A-

I did this. I got an outline from someone that did well, edited my notes into it. Worked pretty well. The thing is, you're still in a way creating your own outline. You're using your notes you got in class. You're still synthesizing the info. You're just skipping the annoying formatting shit.

Nope, my section is also chill. We rocked the group process module.

OK. I should also note that the panel was supposed to be a bunch of high-achieving alums talking about Being Better Lawyers or whatever. They were mostly 10+ years out from law school and were very impressive people. When they were allowed to talk, they gave us some good advice. Especially helpful were their tips on how to make a good impression in the workplace as a newer associate/employee. I also really liked their long-term perspective on career changes and on career paths. Earlier in the day, we had recent alums do panels and so we were able to get both the long-term career perspective and the shorter-term "this is how I got this job and this is what it's like" perspective. Overall, it was a very helpful and informative day.

The problem with the older alum panel was that it was moderated by someone who was oddly attention-seeking and kept talking over the panelists, trying to make them answer stupid questions...I felt terrible for our alums, who were interesting and really nice, but who didn't get as much of a chance to talk as the random "career counselor" moderator.

Where "gunning" comes in is that the moderator wanted the (very experienced) alums to talk about the type of student who they didn't like in school, but they were reluctant to do so, at least in part because they haven't been in law school for a decade.

I would not at all call it a "How Not to Be A Gunner" panel, which I agree would be dumb.

Damn, my class today was definitely not canceled (shakes fist at "GULC kids these days and their canceled classes for every pope who wanders by"). Also the roads coming into DC and metro were quieter than usual. I had the quickest commute today of all semester, weirdly enough.

Oh, I know. I was mostly just trying to make a joke for the sake of the thread, chill.

I thought it was a good panel - there was some good advice, though I had heard much of it from current 2Ls and 3Ls. Other people coming in without those resources probably benefited from it a ton.

I've really enjoyed orientation so far. I think classes will go well.

I agree that those of us without your resourcefulness get a lot out of panels with managing partners, the director of Chicago legal aid, etc. I hope it wasn't too redundant for you!

My apartment is in the "closure zone" and it is a ghost town. I'm guessing tomorrow there will be a mess of people when he addresses Congress...

Reading through it again, it may have been directed towards whomever complained uChi holds these panels. It was quoted really weird and seems targeted, especially because it reads as needlessly passive aggressive, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it's just because of kapnick haha.

Improv was so much fun though!

It was weird AF at first but I loosened up and I actually had a lot of fun with improv.

I was just making a joke to try and keep our class moving forward rather than pointlessly sarcastic (which I think was part of the goal of Kapnick).

One of those girls on the panel seemed like a gunner (the SCOTUS clerk who didn't talk until the end), right? Maybe it was just me.

Maybe a gunner but if so, it seemed like she wished people had communicated with her more or hadn't written her off as someone they couldn't befriend. She was definitely stressing it so it seemed a little like it was coming from experience.

Naw dude, sorry it came off that way. I mostly wanted to complain about the weirdo moderator, plus I'm a pedantic nerd (hence UChi)
