CA Attorney Looking to Practice in NY

Post by DmacShow » Tue Dec 22, 2020 10:35 pm

I currently practice and am licensed in CA but am relocating to NY.

Probably a stupid question that I know the answer to but... any way around having to take the [entire] NY bar? I know CA and NY do not have reciprocity but do I have any options outside of sitting for another exam.

Yes - from what I understand, you can waive into a state like Minnesota or the DC bar (there are more) that allows it based on your MBE or experience. After you do that, you can waive into NY which has reciprocity with these states.

So just so I am clear, I can hop reciprocity from CA - to DC - to NY? I think NY has a minimum number of practice years for reciprocity, do that still apply after waiving into DC?

How about the other way around? Can I go from NY to DC to CA?

No, California doesn't have reciprocity with anyone, it makes everyone take the exam. (Unless something has changed since I last checked.)
