How likely to raise UBE score by 30+ pts?

Post by Swarley » Fri Oct 25, 2019 5:13 pm

Inspired by this thread. http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=303301
Just got back my July bar exam score. "Terrible" would be an understatement. Have to admit that I wasn't really dedicated to studying this summer, due to some chronic illness. Now my life is more or less back on track.

Remember the LSAT that we all took 3 years ago? Everyone on TLS kept saying it's very doable to raise your score from 150 to 170 with a few months' practice. It turns out to be true. My score improved from 153 to 170. Can we say the same about the bar exam? How possible is it to improve from mid-240s to 270ish?

Regardless of how easy a 30+ UBE score increase is in general (though even there, my admittedly non-expert view is that it's entirely doable), in your specific case I have confidence you can do it. You got the 245-ish because you "weren't really dedicated to studying" due to being ill. Study properly and you will absolutely be able to pass. (No one graduates from law school ready to pass the bar without bar prep. Sans adequate studying, at best a law school grad could expect to pass the MPT, but not the MEE and certainly not the MBE.) Bar passage correlates with LSAT score. Anyone able to get a 170 on the LSAT should be able to pass the UBE.

Best of luck in February. You got this!

It's for sure possible to see significant increases. The reason why it's difficult is because there are two main components to the exam: the knowledge and the application of the knowledge. That first component was not something you had to deal with on the LSAT.

So you've got to first figure out if you're scoring low because you don't know the substantive law well enough, or if you're scoring low even though you know the law well enough to score high. If the latter, then it's all about practice questions to get better at applying the law.
