Should I take the same prep course twice?

Post by starr_pben2009 » Fri Sep 29, 2017 2:48 pm

I saw some articles online saying that it is a terrible idea to take the same course twice if you failed the first time. Does anyone who has been through this have advice? I took Barbri the first time, and I'm not opposed to trying another course (I struggled choosing between Themis and Barbri), but Barbri will be free for me the second time around, and i don't know if I should spend that kind of money again...

If it's free, then definitely take Barbri again. But if Barbri gives you a schedule to follow, skip their schedule and make your own schedule because you need to do things differently this time around, such as devoting more time to doing practice questions, skipping the fill-in-the blank lecture handouts, and listening to the lectures during times you are unable to do practice questions (e.g. while you're eating, driving, or brushing your teeth).

I was in your exact situation after I failed in February. I just found out that I passed on my second try. I re-enrolled in Barbri. I scrapped the lectures and schedule and formed a new plan because I had to work full time and was thankfully able to take 3 weeks off. I studied just as I did in law school by creating my own outlines. I started studying at the beginning of May by creating smaller outlines for each subject with information from the Conviser and lecture handouts. I reviewed the outlines over and over then I purchased Lean Sheets 2 weeks before the exam for quick review with more focus on MBE and essay practice.

I stuck with Barbri materials for MBE and essays. I read almost every essay and took notes on rules that were fuzzy. I also created and excel spreadsheet and tracked all wrong or guessed answers for MBE questions, and rewrote the rules.

No matter what you decide to do, trust the study habits that got you through law school!
