July 2016 New Jersey Bar Exam
What did you guys think about the NJ essays? I ran out of time during Civ Pro and Contracts.. bummer! I thought that Torts, Crim and Property were good. Evidence and Con Law were okay.

Re: July 2016 New Jersey Bar Exam
I took the NJ Bar in February 2015 (failed) and July 2015 (passed). Jersey is very liberal in regards to grading. Even if you give the incorrect definition for a rule, you'll get credit if you apply it correctly. In February, I missed half of the issues in the torts essay and still got a 5. IMO, this is the level of difficulty for the NJ essays (easiest at the top):
Torts
Crim
Evidence
Con Law
Civ Pro
Contracts
Property
Con law is somewhat inconsistent. The February 2015 con law fact pattern was ridiculously difficult. The July fact pattern was fairly easy. The others are basically constant. Property is the bane of my existence (both MBE's and essays).

Honestly i think we have it easier than other jurisdictions. I think we should be fine if we studied.FallonJ wrote:What did you guys think about the NJ essays? I ran out of time during Civ Pro and Contracts.. bummer! I thought that Torts, Crim and Property were good. Evidence and Con Law were okay.

I totally messed up the evidence question and did it as a contract question. Think i still have a chance of passing??

If you got 5's on your other essays and your MBE was in the mid-130's or higher then you'll probably pass.

I've been kicking myself the last couple of weeks over having missed a very obvious trespass to chattels crossclaim.
Hoping these essay graders truly are lenient!

Can't find the grading standards for NJ in the pre-UBE system anywhere on their site. My scaled MBE was a 167 in PA, so I should be good in NJ, right?

You could have typed random quasi-legal words, in no particular order, and you will pass with that MBE score.Fivedham wrote:Can't find the grading standards for NJ in the pre-UBE system anywhere on their site. My scaled MBE was a 167 in PA, so I should be good in NJ, right?
But seriously, it's almost impossible to fail with anything over 150 on the MBE. The MBE was 45% of PA and is 50% of NJ, with otherwise similar grading systems, and no one with a 148+ on the MBE failed the PA Bar in the last 3 administrations of the exam.
