Help!! Canadian lawyer taking NY Bar exam

Post by Z-man » Sun Jun 26, 2016 2:01 am

Hello all,

I hope this forum can help me.

I'm planning on writing the NY bar exam in february 2017. I'm already a trained and employed lawyer in Canada.

I'm looking for where I can buy textbooks or get free in formation online on the material to be covered in the UBE.

I basically have to learn 3 years of law school in 3 months...or more precisely, I need to learn how to write a test.

Without knowing anything yet, I think I'm more concerned with the MBE which is all or nothing. The essay portion, as long as I can memorize some law, I think I will be ok in applying it to the facts...but I could be wrong

I'm planning on taking a prep course...barbri, kaplan, themis (not sure which one??)

But they all start in November. I'm looking to start studying now in June since I have a lot to learn, and I work full-time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as well as, where I can get information on the material that I can study...

Thank you for all your help

P.S. I have read many threads here and it has been helpful, and I would love to do MBE questions, but I feel like there is no point doing questions if I don't know the actual law.

i'm a foreign lawyer currently studying for the NY bar (sitting in July). I started at the end of May.

This is what I would recommend, if you really want to start now.

1) Buy critical pass flash cards (condensed outline) - read / review / absorb over time

2) Buy Emmanel's 6th edition - once you have absorbed no 1, start doing some past MBE questions from the book to gauge the type of questions / tips to answer.

Start studying properly with BarBri / some other prep course 2 months out. Which one depending on whether you're paying for it or a firm is.

They also have a bunch of Barbri, Ameribar, etc. books on Amazon. He can start reading now to get acclimated to the material before he takes the formal prep course.

Thank you all. I appreciate your feedback/advice.

Joey, is 2 months enough time to learn a whole new rules of law?

I'm considering taking Themis because it's all online (as I work fulltime) and it's cheaper...and I know a foreign lawyer who passed last July using Themis...but I'm not sure the pros and cons of different prep courses.

I just decided last week to take the NY bar, so I'm learning about the process everyday.

Yes, I should buy books from amazon, but since in NY they are moving to UBE this year, it's different than previous years (even though the laws are the same)

Are there any FREE outlines I can get online?
