Re: Character and Fitness Hearing
I did not have to go through a character and fitness hearing, so take this for what it is worth. I do not think the state bar will keep from granting you admission based on the story that you have described. The point of the hearing will be for you to present your evidence and tell your story and once you do, I think the character and fitness committee will grant you admission because your story is compelling, your story shows you have not only accepted responsibility, but you have corrected your ways. It is also helpful that the DUI charges are not very recent and you can show treatment and sobriety since the events. I would suggest hiring an attorney and I would suggest having those close to you and your experiences with overcoming alcohol addiction write you letters of support as well.
After reading your remarkable story, I have not doubt that you are strong person and can persevere anything. Keep doing what you are currently doing and I wish you all of the best.
I wish I knew more about the character and fitness process and could offer more substantive help, but I felt like I should reply after reading your story to let you know that I am in your corner and support you. You will be fine.

That is one compelling story. From what I have heard, you should be admitted at least conditionally to practice. Very good job addressing difficult issues in your life and overcoming them.

Re: Character and Fitness Hearing
I have done some writing work for a C&F attorney who handles this type of hearing. One thing to keep in mind is that bar admission is not a binary decision, at least not in my state. The bar examiners can elect to admit an applicant for a probationary period, during which the attorney must stay out of trouble. I also recall stories of attorneys who were admitted but were required to maintain active involvement in treatment programs.
I would second the advice of hiring an attorney. Look for an attorney who handles bar discipline matters, preferably one who has previously worked for the licensing or disciplinary departments of the state bar. Good luck. I hope you gain admission. It sounds like you have a promising business if you do.
