NY UBE July 2016 - Which prep course? Forum

Hi,

Hoping I can get some advice here.

I graduated law school in May 2013. I took the NY bar in July 2013, but I failed. I probably did not study as hard as I should have due to planning an overseas move and other personal circumstances.

I am moving back to the states and would like to take the NY bar in July 2016. The first time around I took Themis. I cannot afford Barbri. So I will probably take Themis again for my bar prep for July 2016. However, July is the first time that NY will be administering the UBE. Does anyone know if Themis would be a suitable prep course for the NY UBE? Or perhaps Pieper? Suggestions on how to study for the July NY UBE would be appreciated.

And are there any other issues that I should be aware of as I've been out of law school for three years? I have been working in the legal field overseas, just not as a qualified attorney (though I have been reviewing legal documents for an IT company). A bit nervous, so I need as much advice as I can get before I put down money for a prep course. If anyone has been in a similar situation, i.e., taking the bar a few years after graduating from law school, then tips based on personal experience on how to succeed would be appreciated!

I wanted to piggyback onto this thread. I hope that's ok.

I took the CA February 2016 bar and am currently awaiting results. I am planning on taking the New York Bar in July 2016 just because I would love to work as an attorney in New York.

I used Barbri the first time and I felt prepared for the CA Bar but the cost is steep so I am looking for other options. I am disciplined and feel comfortable studying on my own so I just wanted to know which books I can purchase online from Barbri that may be helpful and if purchasing books from 2014 would be too old?

I keep seeing the MEE outline books on amazon and ebay and I'm not quite sure what the difference is between that and the convisor (MEE/MBE). I thought about buying the MEE outline book and using the convisor book I used from last year plus adapitbar for the MBE's with Barbri's MPT practice books just to practice the MPT's.

Any thoughts?

Well, as no one replied, I decided to go with Themis. Hoping this was a good decision.

Any tips/suggestions appreciated! Should I supplement my Themis course with other materials?

Honestly, I feel like themis is sufficient by itself. I didn't finish the course and didn't see any true gaps in material. More material isn't better.

If you struggle in a specific area, by all means, try a supplement. But I wouldn't waste money unless you've covered it in Themis completely and need more help.

I am going to use BARMAX. I was concerned about the UBE and the other courses that don't publish their pass rates for the UBE. After carefully considering it, and speaking with them multiple times, I decided to go that way. It's not really for people who need a classroom structure, you have to be able to push yourself to do it. But the price is only $999. And $499 for public interest so it's an awesome value.

I passed the CA bar. I was pretty confident I passed when I left the exam. I didn't get any helpful advise so I'm going to self-study.
