Number of Practice MBE Questions

Post by Big J » Fri Feb 05, 2016 11:17 pm

Acknowledging that everyone is different, what is a "safe" number of MBE practice questions to complete to pass? I'll probably end up doing about 2,500, and I look up the ones i get wrong.

It's really subjective, as you mentioned.

I had a friend pass that only did about 600. I have a friend that failed after doing 2500.

Personally? I did 1100 the first time I took the exam, averaging about 62% correct overall. I ended up with a 140.6 scaled MBE score, and failed the exam by 9 points. Also, despite completing all practice questions under timed conditions, and finishing all sets with time to spare, I ran out of time on the real MBE and had to pencil in the last 20-25 answers without even seeing the questions.

Clearly, 1100 wasn't enough for me.

I'm shooting to do 1500 this time around.

I'd advise, perhaps rather than shooting for a set amount completed, you instead aim for a set percentage answered correctly. i.e., keep doing as many as you need to until you're consistently scoring where you want to be. (65% seems to be the sweet spot for those with an MBE that's 50% of the grade)

EDIT:

The bar course I'm in now says 1200 is the minimum anyone should be doing.

I agree with the post above - some people do less and pass whereas others do in excess of 2000 and still fail.
I am a re-taker - having made the mistake of doing as many questions as possibly leading up to the July 2015 without really going through the explanations for my wrong choices and MOST IMPORTANTLY solidifying/reinforcing why my correct answers were right (rather than just a lucky guess).

I'm aiming to do about 1500 this time, and have written down about 100 rules for each subject (c.130 for civil pro!!) (as an example for tort: 'danger invites rescue' - injury to rescuers is sufficiently foreseeable to support proximate cause - therefore X is liable as his negligence caused the dangerous situation that invited the rescue by Y), admittedly some of which are quite repetitive, but certainly a good way to reinforce the rules, especially when reading through the day before the exam, instead of having to do more practice questions.

I did about 2,000-2,200 and passed comfortably -- although it certainly didn't feel like it when walking out of the exam room.

Obviously everyone's different. I've never been a very good multiple choice test taker, so I really focused on nailing down recognizing patterns in the MBE questions and trying to spot the pit falls that the bar examiners want you to fall into. For me that only came with repetition and reviewing questions I had gotten wrong/reading the explanations.
