Anyone fail CA but then pass another state first try? Forum

I failed CA. Debating taking NY or MD for the retake. I live in DC so I don't need to be barred in CA.

I want to see how I failed before registering with NY or MD.

I'm very sorry to hear about your result. I failed the CBX exam before but moved on and took the TX bar and I passed it on the first try. CBX is a whole different bear altogether so don't stay discourage because many fine attorneys have failed the CBX at least once before passing subsequently. Also, there have many others even on this forum who managed to pass another jx state bar after attempting CBX.

A friend of mine who was in the JAG corps told me that if new attorneys from California didn't pass the exam on the first try, they'd send them to take the bar in a different state with a higher pass rate, since apparently you can be licensed in any state . Another friend, also in the JAG, simply elected to take the bar in Wisconsin rather than contend with the California bar.

As the above poster noted, tons of people have failed the CA bar and gone on to have successful careers after either retaking and passing in California or taking the exam in another state.

I believe the California bar is known to be one of the hardest state bar exams to pass so even if you failed CA it's definitely reasonable and possible to take and pass other state's

NY has a million subjects, so maybe take something less tedious if it doesn't matter where you're barred.

Take the dc bar, request ur mbe score from Cali to be transferred. U will only need to take the essay portion in February.

It can be easier to fail if you don't retake the MBE in some states. Depends if they take your actual score or if they make you pass on essays alone.

I have been getting a lot of interviews in NY, so I feel like it could help me to be barred there. But yeah MD is probably a safer bet. Maybe I will take something that has reciprocity with NY like PA.

NY has a high pass rate, so if it would help with job opportunities then definitely take it. I was just saying that if all bars were equal, NY is annoying because it has a million subjects.

I took barbri for CA. Going to have to fork over like 3k for another course. Thinking about Kaplan or Themis for New York. Did not like Barbri at all. I am not sure why they are so expensive and provide so little.

Know multiple people who failed cali and passed other state on first try. In almost every other state, the bar only fails the bottom 10% people who severely fuck up, whereas California fails a lot of people who honestly did a great job. I took in Cali and another state. The MPT for Cali is the hardest thing I ever have done, extremely nuanced. The MPT in other states is literally the easiest most straightforward hypothetical with no ambiguity. The other state essays were REALLY easy and had extremely clear cut answers. The cali essays have no clear cut answers and were all over the place.

Bottom line, you can go elsewhere and pass with no issues.

I liked Themis. Tons of MBE questions, a fair amount of feedback on graded practice essays (depends on your grader though), and a pretty reasonable price. Their directed study program also helps keep you focused without overloading you, though I eventually diverted from their lesson plan.

I'm over it already. There are quite a lot of people I know that failed. I just need information now.

What about IL. What bars does the MBE count for an auto-pass?

You cannot transfer the MBE because the subject matter of the MBE has changed, i.e., they added Civ Pro. Yay double screwed this time.

Id say take NJ. It only tests the mbe subjects, so you can focus all of you're studying on the mbe and, as a collateral effect, pass the essays.

I received my score report and I came with in 7 points of passing. Got around a 140ish scaled on the MBE. Regardless which bar I take, I need to pass the bar and get above a 133 on the MBE to waive into DC.

Should I take CA again or go for NY, PA, MD, or IL? My study time is going to be a bit more compressed this time around. I will probably only have a little over a full month to study. My work has not indicated that it will be firing me yet, so I still have to work.

I believe this is incorrect: the rules appear to have been changed so that any MBE administration within the past 25 months is accepted.
