Re: Strong MBE = AUTO bar pass
GF has brought up wanting to move to Pittsburgh within a couple years, so contemplating taking the PA bar exam (already passed Ohio). 55% essays, 45% MBE, need a 272 to pass. Essay subjects are considerably different from Ohio (fed income tax, family law, conflict of laws, etc) and the PA website states that there are six essays with "usually" more than one subject per essay. My gut tells me I can just study for the MBE (via Adaptibar) and briefly review the state subjects.
Thoughts?
ETA: scrolled back a couple pages and saw that I'd need a 162 to autopass. I guess I'm looking for input from people who have taken multiple bar exams and how they approached the second one.

Re: Strong MBE = AUTO bar pass
Any ideas for NY?
40% MBE / 50% essays (of which 10% MPT) / 10% NY MC
Also, when you guys say 150, does that mean 150/200 MC answered correctly?

Put minimal effort into state specific topics. The NY multiple choice are a cluster fuck anyways and you don't need much state specific knowledge to do fine on the essays. Kill the MBE.moreheesh wrote:Any ideas for NY?

I'm considering just not even looking at state specific stuff anymore because I keep confusing it with the MBE material. Can I get by with zero knowledge of NY specific law? Do we get points for applying the MBE answer on the state essays?JenDarby wrote:Put minimal effort into state specific topics. Re: Strong MBE = AUTO bar pass
I had very little knowledge of state specific subjects. You absolutely get points for applying MBE info. I think the most important part of essays is having a good structure (paragraph 1: The issue here is... Paragraph 2: the rule of law is...." Etc) separating each part into clear paragraphs with obvious lead ins and saying some legal words. One of the essays last year wasn't even a settled part of NY law and I am pretty sure was not in any study materials. MBE knowledge was essentially all you could even use there. Some basic knowledge of the statues of limitations is probably helpful but not necessary.Danger Zone wrote:I'm considering just not even looking at state specific stuff anymore because I keep confusing it with the MBE material. I highly recommend lean sheets. I think you could pass with just the information learned from lean sheets. They highlight the most important info and clearly state how NY law deviates.

Re: Strong MBE = AUTO bar pass
I thought the NY specific stuff was really easy. I memorized cold the NY specific subjects and MBE distinctions (for both, the lecture handouts only, I did nothing beyond those) and thought that the essay day was really, really easy. I did that in about a week and a half towards the end once I had run the MBE into the ground.
I sort of liked it because I basically knew I had passed the exam after the first day, and didn't feel nervous at all about the MBE day.
Really my point is that the NY subjects can probably be ignored but they're much much easier than you'd think they were if you put a little time into them at the end. A week on the ny subjects at the end had a much better marginal benefit than slogging through another week of
MBE to raise your score 5 points.

Note that doesn't include the NY MC or the MPT. I didn't study for either of those. The NY MC were still very hard.

I think of this thread every time I'm having a mini-panic attack. I'm in a 40% MBE state, so I can't really lock-in and assume I'll auto-pass, but I feel like I can get a 150, so as long as I can avoid being terrible at the essays, I feel good.

If you have a good structure and write law words then you'll be fine.anon sequitur wrote:I think of this thread every time I'm having a mini-panic attack. I also have this question. I know the final score is scaled, but do we know approximately what raw score a 150 equates to?moreheesh wrote:Also, when you guys say 150, does that mean 150/200 MC answered correctly?

so remember its actually out of 190, not 200. but i did +15 as my way of estimating last year, meaning 135 raw = 150 scaled. it's probably more like 20 tho.gregfootball2001 wrote:I also have this question. I'll go ahead and shamelessly ask probably a really basic question about civ pro.
For diversity jx, does aliens on both sides destroy diversity? I know a NY vs FL is fine. But a NY+ France vs FL + Australia, is that ok?

In this vein, the court discussed the 2011 amendments to the diversity jurisdiction statute, Section 1332, and noted that “diversity jurisdiction does not exist when a foreign plaintiff sues a foreign defendant,” including actions between a U.S. citizen and an alien on one side (both plaintiffs, for example) and all aliens on the other side (all defendants, for example). Because there is a foreign plaintiff and a foreign defendant, complete diversity is ruined and the presence of a U.S. citizen in such an action “does not salvage jurisdiction because diversity must be complete.”

Lean sheets are amazing. If you like them on fb there is traditionally a discount (to the already low price of $30 or something)dwyf wrote:Lean sheets? What are they and can I please have them?

Thanks for this. I bought them last night. If you like their FB page, there's an App to the left called Welcome that has the code.JenDarby wrote:Lean sheets are amazing. Just ordered Lean Sheets. After slogging through state materiel over past few days and creating ridiculous outlines that took and inordinate amount of time, I figured this was a necessary step.
