The only info on grade distributions I've been able to find (other than median and top 25%) was from the UVA Law Blog:

Top 10%: 3.65
Top 25%: 3.48
Top 33%: 3.42
Median: 3.3
Bottom 33%: 3.18
Bottom 25%: 3.12
Bottom 10%: 2.95

Does this seem fairly accurate for 1Ls?

Statistically speaking, that's how the distribution should look.

can we get more specific? what's top 15% or top 20%... i suck at math

It varies slightly from year to year a little bit, you can't lock it down exactly, but that's generally correct. Each year there could be more people at the top and bottom and fewer at the middle, or things like that, which slightly alter the actual results of the curve, but that's a valid general predictive model. It's hard to say what specifics like top 15% or top 20% would be, because of those small variations. Also, the grade-on line for LR (top 25 students) is somewhere in the 3.7x range traditionally from what I understand.

how are short courses graded? is there a curve? do we actually get a letter grade for a 1 credit course? does that grade come out when the SC is over, or at the end of the semester along with all the rest? thanks.

Short courses are graded the same as regular courses. There is still a requirement of a 3.3 curve. You will likely receive the grade before the end of the semester.

Also, the top 7% cutoff is usually around a 3.71. The past two years it has been a 3.70 and a 3.71 I believe.

that's why i threw the "likely" in there. unless you're saying that SIS doesn't deserve even that, which is a position i can't really be too strongly against

Some of my evals went up last Tuesday/Wednesday and I didn't get the grades till like Saturday/Sunday. The grades could come out today but I usually err on the side of expecting unexplained, unreasonable delays.

How important is facebook for 1L? I have never been a social networking type person and don't want to start now, but then again I don't want to put myself at a disadvantage. Am I doomed to be a social outcast without it? Is it commonly used for academic stuff like organizing study groups, exchanging notes, etc..?

Your ~30-person section will have an e-mail list. There's also an SBA e-mail that goes out twice-a-week for the bigger law school events. Facebook would still be useful for keeping track of some of the social events, but you could definitely get by without it.

Anyone who's bored should read the course eval's for Kordana's Corporations from Fall 2010. There are some classics - between the Rainman comparisons and the person who decided that a course eval was an appropriate place to bitch about law school grades being on a curve.

I'll be in C-ville visiting my girlfriend for V-Day (she's a 4th year undergrad) and I plan on bumming around the law school while she's doing the whole school thing. Ideally, I'd like to sit in on a couple of classes, and I was hoping you guys might be able to help me decide which ones.

My options are:
Property with Julia Mahoney, Richard Schragger, or Alex Johnson
Con Law with Tomiko Brown-Nagin, Kim Ford-Mazrui, Risa Golubuff, Saikrishna Prakash, or Chris Springman

I'll be there for several days, so I could probably sit in and observe several profs, FWIW.

Is there anything else that you guys would recommend for someone visiting UVA for the first time? (I'm applying next cycle, if it matters, and UVA is my top choice.)

I'd probably sit in on Sai's or Sprigman's con law. I have no insight into those property profs. Other professors worth sitting in on (although not all are 1L classes and I have no idea if it would be allowed):

Nelson's Legislation
Collins' Fed Courts
Mitchell's Evidence
Schauer's Con Law

there's that friday Q&A session with the office of admissions. when i went i was the only person there, so i basically had a long one on one conversation with a member of the admissions committee. pretty awesome thing to have on your file.
