How much control do you have over ABA reference checks?

The ABA doesn't verify employment. Do you mean your state bar? You have to provide contact info for your previous employment, so you have some control, although they could talk to anyone if they wanted. But also a manager not liking you isn't going to make a difference for C&F unless they actually know something disqualifying about you.
