Hi all, I'll be a 1L next fall and my current employer knows that I'll be leaving. I was approached today with the opportunity to transition my job over the course of the next year so that I would be in the position to consult for the company while in law school. I'd be able to choose the hours/projects I want to take on so it wouldn't be an issue to cut back significantly when things pick up and I wouldn't need to work at all during the run up to exams. While I recognize that 1L grades are the end-all, be-all, it would be great to pick up some extra $ to help cover expenses and keep building some experience in an industry I could see myself returning to down the line (albeit in a legal capacity).
My questions are (1) is this as good an idea as it sounds to me right now and (2) how many hours could I reasonably expect to work (20 at beginning of semester, scaling down to 0 at the end?)? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.

i wouldn't do it for 1L, but 2L is totally doable. I'm in the process of finding something like this myself.

You could even try second semester 1L, once you see how first semester goes. I probably wouldn't during first semester, but if you figure out how this stuff works over first semester you may be able to carve out time.

I probably wouldn't, if only because 1L grades have such an outsize effect on your future career. It's also important to get into a good routine early on, which might be harder to do if you're juggling projects.
