Question on Texas Ties

Post by Archer@Law » Tue May 17, 2016 8:33 pm

I'm sure this title will bring the pun army out.

Anyway, I am interested in the TLS opinion on moving to an insular market-- Texas specifically-- prior to Law School in order to create more concrete ties. I am trying to decide if its worth the hassle of a new school, job, living situation, etc and then doing the same thing again in two years for Law School. Some background...

I am a junior in undergrad now (Fall 2017 grad date) and I am non-traditional (28 y/o) with solid work experience. I also know I eventually want to end up living in Texas (hopefully working in big law).

My ties as they stand now:
1) I was born in Louisiana and lived there for the first half of my life. All my extended family is there, and both my parents are LSU grads. (Louisiana is like Texas' swampy bastard half-brother right?)

2) For the last half of my life, my immediate family and I have been in KS and that is where I go to school now.

To me it makes sense that someone in my position would find Texas appealing, as Texas is only a few hours from both Kansas and Louisiana. But if I can mitigate any potential future issues by moving now, I would be willing to do it. Thoughts?

Louisiana-born/bred and currently working in TX.

Slightly depends on the type of law you are going for obviously--but with BigLaw the line for employers is basically that you are interested in the level and complexity of work generated in TX markets that does not exist in Louisiana, OK, KS, etc. We have lots of LA and OK people in the firm and a few from Kansas and people generally get it: legal markets there are simply not what they are in Houston and Dallas (and to a lesser extent Austin and even San Antonio).

Certainly don't think a move would be required to show interest.

Thanks for the response.

This is good to hear from someone who is actually in the market. Big law or something else?

Were you grilled pretty hard about Texas on interviews? I am guessing the proximity of LA means firms were not worried about you wanting to take off to the coasts?
