1L Summer - Clerkships, Associates - What Else??? Forum

I keep hearing from former law students that during the summer after 1L only a fraction of students are able to obtain Interships with Judges or Summer Associate positions with law firms. So my question is if only a fraction of people are able to obtain these coveted positions what does everyone else do their 1L Summer?

federal agencies, state agencies, local legal non-profits, national legal non-profits, think tanks, prosecutor's office, public defender's office, research assistant, in-house positions, etc.

I wouldn't describe 1L judicial internships as 'coveted,' either.
