Talking to current students...what does good academic standing mean? Specifically?

This will likely depend entirely on the school and the context. It could mean "above median" to retain a conditional scholarship, or "above a 2.5 GPA" in order to graduate. It's best to check with the school you're looking at for this one.

It usually means whatever the school requires for you not to be on academic probation (if it meant above median it would say top 50% I think).

I initially received a scholarship that specifically said, you must remain in the top 50% to retain. Later, it was said that it would be retained if I remained in good academic standing. I'm pretty sure those are totally different, I just want to make sure.

And by "later," I mean I received a revised offer.

Yeah, this. Lol at 50% of a school's student body not being in good academic standing.

At SMU, it means maintaining a 2.0 or better GPA.
