School's Summer Intro to Legal Writing Course or Barbri?

Post by dunks91 » Tue Apr 05, 2016 7:49 pm

hello all,

I am matriculating this fall and debating on a couple of options for summer prep to 1L.

My school offers an introductory legal writing class which lasts about a week (non-graded). I have also looked into 1L summer prep courses such as the one offered by Barbri, which also lasts about a week (both programs cost about the same).

Any advice on which option is better for future 1L students?

Thanks in advance! :D

I wouldn't do either. Maybe pick up LEEWS or whatever it's called (used) for cheap. Snag Getting to Maybe to read but not until maybe a few weeks into classes because you may have trouble really applying the material otherwise.

You can learn everything you need to get A's in a matter of weeks. Trust me. You don't need to spend all of this time prepping for it.

Spend the $1k on a trip instead.

Neither. Spend the $$$ on something worthwhile.

Yeah, get the above if you wish, but there is no real "secret" to getting As. Depending on where you are going, everyone will be hungry and striving for As. Getting to Maybe did little for me, because the applicability of that writing will depend on your professor. I simply haven't had any professors thus far that give an exam that Getting to Maybe "teaches". It's still a good book and useful to integrate into many styles of writing.

TLDR: Relax. It's April. Enjoy your summer

As a former pre-law school striver, this:
