Discussing Salary (small firm)

Post by JDanger007 » Wed Mar 30, 2016 8:36 pm

Hi all, I have a question for you. I am going to be an associate at a small firm and recognize that very soon I need to have the talk with my boss about the salary I will be paid. I am going to be taking the July bar and absolutely feel like I deserve to know at least a range by the time I graduate. Do any of you believe it is too early to bring it up? Is there a right time? I have my strategy as to how I will present it, just anxious about the "when".

thx.

Frankly, it's odd that you did not discuss compensation at all before accepting their offer of employment. If anything, it's too late to bring it up, not too early. It's only awkward because you didn't ask about it when 99.9% of job applicants would have asked about it.

You may as well ask now.

It's understandable that you want to know what the compensation is. You deserve to know what you're getting into and it's not to early to have this discussion. In fact, I think it's unfair for you to commit as an associate and have no idea what you'll be getting.

Some small employers may understand the saturated market situation and try to take advantage of it. Best to get it out in the open asap. Is there anyone else in the office you can talk to that might let you know? Perhaps that's the better strategy first.
