Pre-law school work experience affect on post-law school jobs

Post by Echoduck » Wed Jan 27, 2016 11:47 am

Background: I currently am serving active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard as a pollution responder/investigator (6 years). My enlistment ends in early February and will need to work roughly 6 months before starting law school in the fall.

Situation: I have been offered a management position with a large coffee company and an environmental investigator position with the state I currently live in. The pay is equal and benefits are not an issue (will remain in the reserve component of the Coast Guard).

Question: Should I choose the job I know I will enjoy (coffee) over the one that will look better on my resume? Because it is only 6 months, will it even matter?

It's only 6 months and Resume just proves you are doing something with your life. You have Coast Guard on it already so I think choosing the one you will enjoy the most is a good idea.

Why not take the 6 months and enjoy your self before you head to law school? No-one is going to care about 6 months, chances are, they won't even notice it.

Otherwise, absolutely do what you'd prefer to do. The only reason I'd choose the environmental part is if you have hopes of working for them down the line in a legal capacity. Even then, 6 months won't make or break you.

Thanks for the input. Now that I am done stressing about getting into law school, I need something else to stress about - I guess.
