yes, and you should consider sending messages to alumni partners and senior associates, perhaps asking to speak to them about their practice/firm. Doing it earlier is better since you can avoid the whole "I need a jerb" that may induce people to network later. Asking for just coffee to talk over practices and to get these narcissists to talk about themselves. They will give you some key points about what they do, what the firm wants to promote about itself. It will (a) create connections with the firm in question and (b) help you develop a personal narrative for "why x practice" or "why biglaw."

Yeah, it can be useful. It's just one of those things that might not ever work, but the possibility that it might work makes you do it.
I second the previous poster's rec re hitting up alumni. This can be helpful through law school since you might end up interviewing at a place where an alum is at and you could hit them up for tips.
Make sure to keep it professional.

Yes. LinkedIn is a fantastic resource when it comes to hunting down alums. I got my 2L summer job in a market that my school doesn't typically place in by reaching out to an alum on LinkedIn.
