That all makes sense, I suppose I am just fishing for anecdotes. I know there are plenty of other factors (interviewing skills, network, etc.) that go into it, and grades once you get there will ultimately be most important, but based on your personal knowledge, would you be able to recommend GULC to a NY biglaw or bust K-JD, debt financing with a modest (i.e., less than half tuition) scholly? (pretty hypothetical, since no scholly offer yet, but I can't help but run through scenarios)

Did anyone here do an LLM to take advantage of 2L OCI after striking out the first time? Or know of somebody who did?

As far as I'm aware, you get one bite at the 2L OCI apple. GULC has other more specialized OCI events that may include LLM or 3Ls but EIW is its own beast

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
This is correct. I do know a couple people who tacked on an LLM in hopes of better job prospects from other sources, but 2L OCI is one and done.Capitol_Idea wrote:That's not how OCI or LLMs workladybug1989 wrote:Did anyone here do an LLM to take advantage of 2L OCI after striking out the first time? Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I should have clarified. This is JD/LLM...which means u return for one extra semester after completing the JD program. I know for a fact someone who has done this, and did 2L OCI all over again (had multiple offers). I was just trying to get more data points and see how it went for anyone else who took this route.Capitol_Idea wrote:That's not how OCI or LLMs workladybug1989 wrote:Did anyone here do an LLM to take advantage of 2L OCI after striking out the first time? Yea this is not true; you get access to 2L OCI through the Tax Joint JD/LLM before 3L as long as you're accepted in time.EzraFitz wrote:This is correct. Do u get access to 2L OCI if you do any of the other joint JD/LLM programs, like Securities and Financial Regulation, or is it only exclusive to tax?BmoreOrLess wrote:Yea this is not true; you get access to 2L OCI through the Tax Joint JD/LLM before 3L as long as you're accepted in time.EzraFitz wrote:This is correct. Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
From the (very very few) people I know who tacked on LLMs, they were not able to participate in OCI again. Granted, I know neither what their LLM is, nor when they were accepted. Shouldn't have generalized based on that, my bad.BmoreOrLess wrote:Yea this is not true; you get access to 2L OCI through the Tax Joint JD/LLM before 3L as long as you're accepted in time.EzraFitz wrote:This is correct. I only know for sure about Tax, but I'm willing to bet that's the only one eligble for 2L OCI as far as joint LLM's you can tack on later.

I don't know why you wouldn't be able to participate in EIW so long as you had two years remaining until graduation. Are we thinking that's some sort of OCS policy? NALP?

I know law students aren't known for partying, but when you guys went out, where did everyone typically go? Georgetown UG area?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I think I did, if I remember correctly. Edit it down for length if the agency/firm/judge/etc sets a specific length; otherwise 9 pages is fine. If anything, I'd go back and flesh anything out that suffered due to word count restrictions. Definitely give it another read and try to find ways to make it better / suck less before sending it out.thelincolnlawyer wrote:Do most people use their research memo from LRW as their writing sample when applying to 1L jobs? I'm not sure what else to use since we aren't technically allowed to use our final exam memo until grades are posted. If so, do you cut it down at all? Mine is sitting at 9 pages, not sure if that's too long for a sample.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I dunno, I personally have always enjoyed going out in Chinatown. Granted, most of my "going out" is a decent dinner with friends, not getting hammered. So places like La Tasca and Graffiato are great to me. But Rocket Bar can always be a good shitty watering hole when you need one. Also, the new beer garden in NOMA is a nice place for relaxing. The Hilton Garden Inn in NOMA also has a great happy hour.thelincolnlawyer wrote:There's not really one place people go out. 14th and U St NW is very popular, as are Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan. I've only been to The Tombs by the UG and it was filled with undergrads (if that's your thing). A lot of people also go out in Arlington. To each their own, try a few spots and see what sticks. There a couple of spots in Chinatown if you need a quick drink for happy hour or something, otherwise stay away from there.RParadela wrote:I know law students aren't known for partying, but when you guys went out, where did everyone typically go? Georgetown the neighborhood is by far my least favorite part of the city and should be avoided at all costs

90% of my drunken shenanigans have taken place on either U Street or H Street, with a bit of Dupont thrown in.

Got my first grade back and it was a B. I thought it was one of my better exams too. Now I'm worried sick about my other classes

When I think of going out I think of partying pretty hard.. Although I know I might have to cut back on that in law school.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
No. Bear in mind that I'm older and married and not super enmeshed in the social scene, but I've never once heard one of my friends say anything about going to an UG party. I suspect it would be seen as weird. The law school and UG campus are really very distinct. I've never even been to the UG campus as a law student.Thelaw23 wrote:Do you see a lot of mingling/partying/drinking with the UG people?
I know this is a very old TLS meme, but try not to stress. As I'm sure you know, there's often not a relationship between how you feel about an exam and how you actually did. I'm sure you did better than you think on one of your other exams to compensate for this one.ladybug1989 wrote:Got my first grade back and it was a B. I thought it was one of my better exams too. Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
If you don't have a job or kids and law school is all you are doing, then you don't have to give up shit. Take law school seriously, but that doesn't mean studying nonstop.
Your job is to figure out how to maximize returns on investment of time. More studying only equates to a higher grade up to a point. And if you can learn how to efficiently learn and formulate answers that your professor wants to hear, then you're actually getting a useful skill that will serve you as a lawyer (way more than 99% of the class material)

I worked and went to class full time in UG, so I'm looking forward for the opportunity to just go to law school for three years without work. Weirdly, I am looking forward to it
