old edition of casebook? bad idea?

Post by supersplittysplitter » Wed Aug 05, 2015 4:17 pm

I've read on some other threads that for civ pro it's important to get the latest edition since it's the one area of law that changes from time to time. Is this good advice? Or is it a good idea to get the latest editions for all classes? If the only difference between editions is a few extra cases here and there, I'm not sure it's worth it.

The problem with doing that isn't that the law has changed significantly, it's that the you will have trouble figuring out what to read based on the page numbers in the syllabus (or what the professor tells you to read). It could also lead to a situation where, during lecture, the professor calls on you and directs you to a certain page, and you won't be able to follow. Not the end of the world if you're operating on a very tight budget, but not ideal.

You'll be fine with older editions. These books change only slightly. Also, every law school library keeps at least one casebook for each course taught so you can always compare that to your older edition of you're worried.

Penny smart, pound stupid imo. You'll be able to recoup some of the difference by selling the new book to the next batch of 1Ls.

Would getting the 2013 version of the UCC contracts supplement instead of the 2015 one the professor wants us to get okay? I also got the 2014 civ pro supplement instead of the 2015 one(our professor recommends the 2014 one) I bought the versions of the casebook our professors asked us to buy.
